Win Server backup to FreeNAS etc.

We are looking at Ahsay for a backup solution for clients that have Windows server onsite, allowing a nightly backup to our storage.

I wondered if there were any other opensource alternative, ideally to cover:

Microsoft Exchange
Microsoft SQL
Bare metal restore/complete image
Maybe VM's ?

Ahsay is pretty good, not cheap but it has improved over the years.

    What type of vm's ?

  • Xen and Hyper-V (using Veeme for VMWare

Ahsay is just so expensive :(

macrium reflect is free for home use. 60 dollars single license. Uses VSS but for servers costs 200.
    R1Soft is another paid version.
There are tons without bare metal restore tho, depends what you wish to save.

  • That looks interesting.. thanks.. going to have a read and a play :)

Hmm.. no Exchange support.. could work out expensive and the opensource doesn't use VSS :(

Very close though and might fit some customers needs

@YKM I use it personally for our node backups. If you decide to use it i can vouch for it.

  • I just found this http://www.secovault.com/

Shame it uses s3 though.. might be handy for someone

For exchange support you could use windows backup( former ntbackup ) to dump to file and then make a filebackup.

Same for sql server, to keep costs down.
Then theres duplicity or similar to backup to another place.

Cloudberry backup? You can backup to glacier for a penny a gb. Also many providers google, s3, etc. Has private key and/or compression as well optionally. You can have it compress and encrypt for file backups and exchange/SQL for more free space. You can have different backup sets goto different providers with custom settings. You can also send to shared drive or network path. I'm experimenting with backing up to a network path via VPN

  • @MikHo thanks for the idea, bandwidth may be an issue but it would work :)

@bdtech Cloudberry looks very cool and you can got to a NAS so over a VPN maybe like you said.. going to take a look at this.

Thanks for all the comments and ideas so far, it seems there are good alternatives that wont cost a fortune !

If you use windows backup, make sure to turn on the exchange vss service (which is off by default)

If you make backups to a network drive you can only keep one copy of the backup (unless you move the files after the backup) backups to local drive can be done incremental. So best solution is to add a än iscsi disk ( i think windows backup will se this as local storage)

  • try this one
