how to reset admin password of windows vps?

My friend hosted his sites on a windows server. And he just forgot the password and asked me to help him get it back. I know a reinstall will get the problem solved but all the data would be gone. Any suggestion on this?

@Kris 's guide is exactly what you need. You can also use SystemRescueCD https://www.system-rescue-cd.org/Download

If you forgot your Windows XP password, there are a few different methods that allow you to regain access to your computer, but none of them actually reveal your password — they simply let you change it to another combination.

Using a password reset disk is the simplest way to get back in business if you forgot your Windows password. Of course, it assumes that you had the forethought to create a password reset disk when you set up your computer.

If you have no password reset disk, then you will have no choice unless try some third party password recovery tool like iSeePassword, UUkeys and more...

If you found freeware, please don't forgot to share with us.

It works good @cyrstalc try it

  • You can also use Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, or even a Windows install DVD to remove the forgotten Windows password:

Nice necro from almost a WHOLE month. If you had actually read the thread, you'd know the issue was solved. Thanks for being useless, again.

  • No one mention NTPassword and Hiren's Boot CD? They are both great tools to reset local password.

In your your situation, you can recover your password form Safe Mode.Windows 7 system has a built-in administrator account that is created during Windows installation and disable by default, which has no password in it. You need to enable that account before forgetting your other admin account password. Otherwise your built-in administrator account won’t appear in the screen in this tip.

Start your win 7 computer and press “F8″ while the computer boots up. Scroll down to “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” with the arrow keys on the keyboard and press “Enter.” Your computer starts in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

if it still not works, try some windows password reset tools like uukeys, ophcrack.

It's possible that you will be able to reset your Password. try to type your password using the on-screen keyboard.

How do you do that if you have forgotten your password in the first place?

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor is free and I have used for years. It could be used to reset lost computer password:

There is another way: switch in Settings from Microsoft account to local account with the name instead of email and without password. After that, any traditional desktop program and web browser will work without problems like in previous Windows. However, modern apps which use Microsoft services (like mail, Skype, Xbox etc) will ask you to switch back to MS account or authenticate locally; it may be inconvenient if you rely on them.

if you didn't have a microsoft account, you can also try some free windows password recovery tools like ntpassword, ophcrack, tunesbro wingeeer..
