Server Backups?

AndreAndre Member
edited January 2013 in Help

Does anyone know of a backup system in which I will be able to backup a directory on a dedicated server (around 10GB) to an off site VPS?

I do know of rsync, but what I'd like are more of "snapshots" taken every 24 hours, which I could restore to at any point in time, with access to the last week of backups kept (preferably an automated system to delete snapshots older than 7 days)

Also -
Any providers able to offer a storage VPS with:
256MB RAM
1TB HDD in RAID1 (at least)
1TB Bandwidth
1 Gbps port
All offers accepted.

Thanks!

  • @Andre Not sure about a provider, but for backup software - Take a look at R1Soft CDP, and getting a vps license for that from a reseller.

Install that on your backup server, and have it take backups from your vps.

  • @lele0108 could hook you up with something like that, for about $30 / mo.

Your better of with a Kimsufi unless you can find a realistic reputable provider who have stock.

  • You should use Duply for the backups

@AsadHaider That looks interesting. After a quick read though, it says it'll backup to a local drive.. I'd like this to be off site

@Patrick Yes, I have been considering the lowest KS with 2x1TB drives in RAID1, but only 100Mbps port. (Also, not all of us are in the UK -- http://ovh.us/)

@gsrdgrdghd Now that's a promising one. I have to test it out.

    R1Soft 50GB Storage + CDP Agent: £12.00/mo

Can probably go down to £8.50/mo for 15GB Storage.

It is off site. Install their software on your backup server, and the agent on your vps connects to it continuously backing up data.

    @George_Fusioned
I'll be needing about 1TB as per the second part of the OP.

    @AsadHaider I see now (:
I was trying to read it all on my phone and just skimmed over it - looks like a more viable option now.

  • Recommend rsnapshot if your backups doesn't consist of too many files. Works great, easy to configure and restoring is just a rsync back.

If you're working with small files I'd recommend ZFS snapshots, works for our Maildir storage.

  • @Andre we can offer you that, You can contact us here: https://www.cloudshards.com/submitticket.php?step=2&deptid=2

Just create a ticket and we will come with a price

    I could certainly do this:

    2 Cores
    256mb ram
    1Tb raid 5
    1Gbps

    $25 per month

Install FreeNAS on your VPS and use ZFS, full support for snapshots, mirroring and rsync..

  • YKMYKM Member

ZFS needs 4gig or more of ram though

    @Andre
Ah I thought the 1TB part was a second request.

Hmm... JoneSolutions charges $170 for 1TB R1Soft Storage (http://www.jonesolutions.com/backup.html), I could do it for $110, but it's still is a lot more expensive than getting a Kimsufi as mentioned above.

Anyway, I see there are many 1TB storage VPS offers already, unfortunately R1Soft server requires 2GB RAM (we're R1Soft partners, so I could provide you a R1Soft Enterprise Server license).

    Have you considered duplicity?

  • YKMYKM Member

Kimsufi KS R-4G with FreeNAS.. 23.91 euro a month..

I would go for a low spec dedicated server for that.

  • Duplicity for the win. I backup all my VPSes to S3.

  • There's also rdiff-backup : http://rdiff-backup.nongnu.org/

Compared to duplicity, read here: http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/duplicity.html

  • I'm all for duplicity! Works really really well.

  • +1 for Duplicity

  • Can someone tell me the difference between duplicity and backuppc?

Like you,I think that kimsufi will be best for his need

  • btw, if duplicity is to hard, check Duply out: http://duply.net/

  • @Shigawire said: Can someone tell me the difference between duplicity and backuppc?

For one thing, duplicity works more from the client side - sending backups to the backup server. Has many more features for encryption, backup targets etc.

With backuppc, the backups are initiated from the backup server (usually via rsync.)

Both are great. backuppc gives you a nice web ui for point and click restores if you're the only one that needs access, and does pretty good de-dup internally to reduce the size of backups.

    Thanks for that.
I'm thinking that backuppc or rdiff-backup may be the best options here for me.

    What would you recommend?

  • @sleddog said: There's also rdiff-backup : http://rdiff-backup.nongnu.org/

+1. Worked with it and it's excellent. It uses rsync for transferring (so only changed bits are sent) and you can do for example the following command: 'restore back to 28 January', or 1 week ago, or anything else. It's really clean and neat!

    Thanks, that cleared it up.

I am currently using BackupPC and I think it is great.
Simple, but great. I can restore single files with a mouseclick, this is awesome.

I wouldn't restore full backups, anyways, just critical files and databases (which are exported via mysqldump before backuppc fetches the files)

  • I use s3cmd, it's excellent
