What are you using your LowEndVPS for?

Just a quick question for further reference :)
I am interested in what you are using your average LowEndVPS (> 512mb ram) for?

I have given some examples but feel free to specify!

Kind regards and thanks for your input,

I am using a lowend vps to test, play, run some Linux commands, and build a working server to host a website.

  • Tonight on lowenddetectives, @k0nsl and @traffic smell something suspicions in the air. It is time to investigate!

    Thanked by 1k0nsl

I didn't say anything bad. But I think it's only fair that he publishes what his main account is.

  • Mostly testing. Etherpad/calc, git, kanban, Seafile server, also installed a Tox node but for now unused.

Nice ideas, time for me to deploy those stuff (other than Git, already deployed) on my server :) Thanks!

Mostly nameservers for cpanel and backup. Not much else right now.

  • POLL SOFTWARE BROKEN

I tried clicking on the two that I do the most and it only allows one.

Anyway, I clicked "small web projects" in the hopes that everyone would assume that to includes VPN services and mail servers.

Np. :) If you're looking for ideas ...

    • (you mentioned git, not sure if you also have a repo browser) - e.g. Gitlab, Gogs, Kallithea
    • file server, distro mirror - e.g. Owncloud, Pydio, Seafile, Syncany, Syncthing
    • private proxy, GRE tunnel
    • mesh network if you manage multiple servers
    • server panel/service installer - e.g. ISPconfig, Sandstorm.io
    • photo/video hosting/streaming - e.g. Lychee, MediaGoblin, Streama
    • game server
    • server monitor, uptime status page - e.g. Observium, Munin, ServerStatus by mojeda, Scout Realtime (or the Bash script by sleddog with very simple setup)
    • chat server - e.g. IRC, ssh-chat, XMPP (w/ web client, add Jappix or ConverseJS), Mumble, Loop (Firefox Hello), Rocket.Chat
    • url shortener - e.g. YOURLS
    • pastebin - e.g. Stikked, ZeroBin
    • wiki, cms, web-based note-taking app, text editor (Codiad or ICEcoder is cool)
    • article/feed reader - e.g. Wallabag, Tiny Tiny RSS
    • public federated social network - e.g. GNU Social/Quitter
    • search engine - e.g. searx
    • team project management system - e.g. OpenProject, Collabtive

Finally, I'll just leave a random fun little app here: Meteor Blocks

    so many things

Damn, that really helpful. Thanks alot! What's the point of mesh networks like Tinc, if it's not used for cutting down on latency? Would like to know :)

  • I use a lowendvps to host a forum,

Don't know if many people call 1GB RAM low end.

    That's high end and PREMIUM.

LowEnd usually refers to 256mb RAM if I'm not wrong.

  • @theroyalstudent: I guess it could be useful if you need a private encrypted network and run services on top of it. A bit like Enigmabox.
