Why not use BuyVM or Backupsy? For that price you will get enough backup space and awesome service
5-10 per month or year?
Ramnode SSD cached should do nicely if per month

Hosthatch
Kimsufi KS-1 - $5/month + $13.99 setup fee, but 2GB RAM + 500GB HDD
Owncloud runs like a bit of a dog on the KS-1...
If you're talking monthly we've got a HA KVM VPS with 1 core/1GB ram/250GB storage/1TB bw @ 1gbps at $6/mo in Atlanta.

Never had an issue personally. Were you running it with SQLite or MySQL? I found switching to the latter gave a hell of a performance increase.
I setup on RamNode SSD cached only 256MB RAM. It's working fine.
@Nekki I'm running MySQL locally yes, I think using several external storage sources might be to blame...
I've run into a couple issues with the Samba module, namely files over 4GB being truncated if downloaded from the web interface and sync managed to get itself stuck in a loop.
Playing with Pydio at the moment and also trying the OS doing the samba bit, nice UI, bit slow and their sync client is somewhat meh.
Might give seafile another try used to like that other than it was a bugger if a repo/libary got corrupted.
That Infinit p2p FS also looks interesting and has a drive App although it depends on how "secure" it is in terms of people being able to access your cluster.
I also used owncloud for filesync and found it to cause lots of file conflicts on 2-3 devices.
I now use syncthing for sync between servers where files get updated all the time and have a few sync issues between one Atlanta and Paris server, but it's not so bad.
Owncloud seems to be excellent for calendar, mozilla sync and contacts though.
I have tried owncloud and got a very slow syncing when you have many small file. Now, I use seafile for file sync. It also have command line interface so you can make file sync to another server for replication backup
I also prefer seafile rather than owncloud. Seafile have client on mobile device for free also we can encrypt the files on server.
