CentralVPS - new stroage vpses coming soon

edited January 2013 in Providers

Soon we will be launching a line of storage vpses, trying to think of a decent price, size.

I had in mind:
250GB Storage
256mb ram
1 IPv4
1.5TB bandwidth on 100mbit port
SolusVM
for $7/month.

What do you guys/gals think?

I think you need more than 100GB of storage

  • @CVPS_Chris said: I think you need more than 100GB of storage

Well, that plan would be the LET/LEB plan, I'd ofc. have other plans that are out of LEB/LET price range.

  • CVPS_ChrisCVPS_Chris Member, Patron Provider

I meant for the LEB plan :)

  • I think what Chris means is it's too less storage for $7.

  • Well, I was thinking from 100gb - 200gb storage. I think 150gb is a even middle.

    This

  • Id say 200-250gb as a minimum.

  • Indeed, for 7 bucks a month 100GB is a bit on the low side. Uncle Sal does 200GB for $20/quarter, so $6,67/month. This is on RAID protected storage... Is yours as well RAID protected?

  • Awmusic12635Awmusic12635 Member, Host Rep

Not sure if yours is raid protected but we do $3.50 for 100. And $7 for 250gb. Lower bandwidth though,

    Updated to 250gb.

  • @Freek yes, we'd have these specs:
    Intel E3-1240V2
    32GB RAM
    4x 1TB RE4 HDD (might go to 12x 1TB though)
    LSI 9260-4i w/ BBU

I wouldn't do storage VPS on those. You'd be losing money unless you are highly overselling.

  • @curtisg said: yes, we'd have these specs:

At a company that begins with 'C' and ends with 'oloCrossing'?

  • @Zen said: Make sure that chassis can take 12 :)

I believe it can, but I'll double check

we'd buy the hardware ($2000 or so) and then just colo for about $60/onth

  • @Damian said: 'C' and ends with 'oloCrossing'?

    yep.

  • I wouldn't even bother with 1TB drives, 3TB drives seem to be the sweet spot right now.

  • @Microlinux said: I wouldn't even bother with 1TB drives, 3TB drives seem to be the sweet spot right now.

It's cheaper to get multiple 1tb drives then to get 3tb drives.

  • "Intel E3-1240V2

I can use colocrossing and get this in buffalo with a /27 ip stack for $199"

Your storage VPS just arent going to work on this server with the prices involved. If there is room in the chassis for 12 drives, then you may wish to consider 12 x 2 tb to make this affordable for you. You'll need an expander/backplane for the raid controller.

  • @curtisg said: we'd buy the hardware ($2000 or so) and then just colo for about $60/onth

And you forget about the cost of the hardware factored in afterwards in the monthly cost? You do know that your $2000 is an investment and has to be calculated like an investment. What about support costs and other running costs?

$7/250GB still doesn't get you anywhere close.

  • @curtisg said: It's cheaper to get multiple 1tb drives then to get 3tb drives.

I'm not sure where you're buying hard drives, none-the-less your initial investment is not the only thing to consider, you'll also be using 3 times as much power and 3 times as many drive ports.

Sounds good to me, as long as it is not OpenVZ with over allocated storage, people do not tend to trust OpenVZ storage plans much for obvious reasons.

  • RobertClarkeRobertClarke Member, Host Rep

Does the actual node have a 1gbit line? I've learned from experience that 100mbit shared for a storage node is suicide.

  • people do not tend to trust OpenVZ storage plans much for obvious reasons.

OpenVZ doesn't oversell, people do. The provider is of much more importance than the type of virtualization.

@Microlinux said: OpenVZ doesn't oversell, people do.

Yes people do :) OpenVZ just makes it easy and transparent to the end user.

    With the obvious maths issues here I stand by my point, 4 x 1TB Raid 5 gets you about 2700GB usable after OS, swap etc, 2700 / 250 = 10.8, 10 x $7 = $70

    $60 colo x 12 + $2000 for server = $2720

$2720 / $70 = 38 months ROI and thats not even looking at the solusvm license.

    And that is nuts :)

sure if you went for the 12 x 1TB drives then you could sell 40 x $7 p/m, add $700 for the extra drives on to purchase price and you have a ROI in just over 12 months but then the colo goes up for the extra power/U etc so probably more like 18 months, if that is sustainable then go for it @curtisg just don't make me sad and use OpenVZ or let me see a rage thread about someone running out of space on their 250GB plan after they upload 60GB of data.

  • @AnthonySmith

Agreed, I'm not arguing on the math.

Keep in mind however, a smart host is going to oversell and add capacity as needed.

  • @Freek said: Uncle Sal does 200GB for $20/quarter, so $6,67/month. This is on RAID protected storage...

No. It's not RAID-protected. @concerto49's backup plans are, though.

@Freek is talking about the new KVM backup plans which use RAID5 storage (out of our SRX/VRX coraid san ;-) )
