cPanel Dedicated IP rdns?

edited January 2016 in Help

I have an account set with a dedicated IP & have send mail from accounts dedicated IP on in cPanel. rdns is set to server name and not the domain does this matter?

When I test mail with mail-tester.com I get a message saying "Your reverse DNS does not match with your sending domain"

  • You will need the rDNS record matching mail-tester.com

If you configured in Cpanel to send out email via dedicated ip, you need to configure rDNS to the same as the main domain configured for the cpanel account.

Think I've solved it by setting rdns for IP to mail.domain.com
Just have to wait for propagation.

  • yes, setting the rdns to the same record you're using as your mail server will solve the problem.

    @n1kko

you need to request your upstream provider to do this...

    else it wont work

I can set rdns myself with linode so should be ok.

For reference, you can edit the HELO statement in /etc/mailhelo and that is all that the PTR record needs to match. It's just basically an "I am who I say I am" situation, and you can manually define it there.

  • Thanks @jarland I get this from mail-tester.com

Your IP address12.13.12.13 is associated with the domain mail.domain.co.uk.
Nevertheless your message appears to be sent from domain.co.uk.

You may want to publish a pointer (PTR type) DNS record with a value of domain.co.uk or use mail.domain.co.uk as hostname in your mail software

Here are the tested values for this check:
    IP: 12.13.12.13
    HELO: domain.co.uk
    rDNS: mail.domain.co.uk

That indicates that you set the PTR for "mail." but the HELO statement doesn't have that, so you should instead set the PTR for just the domain itself.

  • asking your provider to set it for you is your best bet, if you're still having trouble with it that is
