What is the difference between BGP Announcing and a BGP Session?

What exactly is the difference between announcing IP prefixes, and actually setting up a BGP session?

In my test labs and DN42, the standard for peering was simply just BGP sessions so I'm confused what the difference is as some providers are offering BGP announcements.

BGP announcements is a feature used to make sales to those individuals who cannot configure BGP peering.

Not really, many people do not want to run a router and often it makes no sense at all. Announce is nice and very valid in such cases.
