Exactly. It's just poor configuration and complete misunderstanding of what a VPN's scope is...
The headers and segment sizes can also give it away
that you are using a VPN

Solution for headers, is to install add-on to modify header
as VPS is linux based, and you use windows or mac,
this is detected as user-agent mismatch.
so edit the header to say linux, e.g. firefox addon http://mybrowseraddon.com/useragent-switcher.html
