Setting un rage4 vanity dns

Hello everyone I am looking for some help on setting up rage4 vanity dns for a WordPress multisite install.

I tried but for some strange reason i cannot manage to make it work. I asked for help from rage4 support but as of now i still cannot use the vanity dns for my mu install. Anyone here willing to give me a hand on this.

Thanks in advance.

If you are the person which I think you are, then your vanity NS works correctly. The problem is with webserver's IP address

    Thanked by 1Clouvider
  • The problem is that our website sits on 3 different servers ( 3 for the front end) and 3 for the backend ( dbs)

I am not very technical about this. Would be awesome if someone could assist me for the first time, and show me step by step how to set everything up.

Things were alreay setup by an old team member but he does not answer anymore to messages and anything and i really need to get this done.

  • You will want round robin DNS.

Go to your domain in rage4

Under "A", click new record. In the box that says "Record Value", set the IP Address of your frontend server. Afrer clicking save, repeat the process again for the two other front end server ips.

You may need to adjust the record name if it is on a subdomain.

Thanks for you explanation. I have all my servers with SoftLayer and they show me 2 ips for each server one public and one private. Which one i need to use?

Also about the record name if subdomain. I am trying to map a domain site.com using the vanity NS on rage4 to a subdomain from my multisite install.

In my rage4 dashboard i have 2 domain atm the main mu install domain and the domain i want to map to the subdomain from the mu install.

  • You need to use the public IP (or deploy HAproxy to balance between them as with round robin, you'll lose 1/3 of your traffic if one frontend dies)

  • I've added the public ips of the front end servers to the domain i want to map in rage4. Now it shows me apache page -.-

You've made progress. Now, you need to configure the server to serve the domain. Seems to be an apache thing that you need to configure. Mapping the domain to a subdomain from the MU install will require you to add a ServerAlias in Apache2.

Please... If you don't have an idea about such basic things, just don't do them at all. Let someone else, more professional, do the work. Your system will sooner or later get exploited by someone and will host either bullshit like warez, child pornography, drug selling websites, etc. or send unsolicited bulk email.

Just my 2 cents, because YOU are in the end the one who has to explain local authorities what happened and why they should let you run and not put you in jail and YOU are the one that has to proof that you are innocent.

  • This is not about warez. I just asked if someone could explain me how to set up vanity dns. I don't understand how this could get to what you said.

  • @magzalin: You misunderstood the previous post. Fusl only suggested that you hire professional help for setting up your site.

There have been cases where badly configured servers have been hacked and used for illegal purposes. In the best case your host suspends your service without warning, and in the worst case you can be held legally responsible for the content on your hacked server.

Yeah I think you are right. I am going to way till the guy that manages the services gets back from hospital. I asked here cause i wanted to try and set it up on my own. Anyway thanks to anyone for their help.

  • Difficult to help if you don't give much details. Seems so far you fixed your DNS A records to point to your webserver (frontend).

Now you need to setup Apache and Wordpress.

  • @rincewind thanks for input. I will just wait a couple more days and i will get it fixed by who manages the servers for me.
