  • @jarland said: I reaaalllly want to put Ubuntu on all these things. Thing how much longer they'd last (well let's not think about unity) as fast and functional. I'm having a little bit of trouble with RenWeb software over Wine. It seems to work but then a few functions fail. Managing linux would put me in such a better position though, not having to figure out the Windows based solutions to things I already know how to do.

This is so they can manage class rooms and stuff? Aren't there linux solutions? Why does this need to be installed on workstations that students will be accessing?

It's full management for students and teachers. Lab machines have it for teachers, students typically use the web site. It's just a juggling game for me obviously, but the software is pretty much not a negotiation point, at least not right now. There's also some strange printing issues from linux that I keep having. For example the same PDF may not print in Ubuntu's default viewer that will in Adobe's, and then sometimes it's the other way around. By not printing I mean sending corrupted data to the printer and forcing me to restart the device. Probably not a big hurdle, but that's pretty much the story of my day, every change has 15 unintended consequences.

Regards to the thread title, this is not censorship.

Google is a service provider, and has the right to say how their service can or cannot be used.

It's no different than a web hosting provider saying, "no porn sites".

  • It is kind of ironic for me to see this action after google's plea for action about governments' meeting for more internet regulation

  • Why not install k9 on each system?

    also http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/15337.html

  • Simple cookie if us based

What's k9? That article is outdated now sadly. Now you can, at best, block their caching servers and cut out maybe half of the thumbnails, while simultaneously causing errors on gmail.

Not free, but reasonably priced for a small school I guess, wonder how effective it is =/

When I was in school, they didn't have any internet filtering for quite while, when they finally did install something it blocked my site after awhile because it was "porn". There was hardly any content, let alone porn.

  • how do we search for ponographic in google anyway?

Sure, also if a leading newspaper decides to not publish good news about a certain opposition party, that is not censorship and the government had nothing to do with it, didnt outlaw that party or something.
There are other media outlets, but only the main ones really count, the main TV, the main newspapers, you are allowed to have your own opinion as long as you say it at home under the shower.

    This.

I hate to state the obvious, but a VPS might probably work, the resources to do that are well within the doable side for a 256/1 ghz type of thing,

I actually don't mind a vps. Got a great little HP server off eBay, idea being to replace teacher computers with RDP VMs just using recycled junk machines laying around. A 1GB Windows 7 beats a 256mb WinXP. Got an owncloud system running on it too for internal storage. Probably could have kept the domain via this system, but it was just so much to manage for a place that's lucky to see 40 machines powered on at once through the whole place. Seemed excessive. Can literally walk to the furthest computer from me in 45 seconds. Perfect place to break out of the normal and take the "LEB" approach to a work environment. I like creative solutions.

Oh my god renweb is CRAP. My private school used it, it was just horrible. And slow. Very slow.

I'm not loving it yet, not quite hating it. No real experience with alternatives. It's definitely one of those things where once you've got everyone trained on it and dependent on it, flipping the switch to something different takes an act of congress.

Getting anything done on the technology side takes an act of congress because none of the teachers or administration know how to use computers or why you would spend so much money for X thing..... I bet the teachers are all still using those old school projectors with the big light down bottom and the mirrors up top.

It's actually not so bad, but I get why it's difficult. Primary goal is that they can get their job done. If they were doing it before I got here, my primary responsibility is to not upset the balance to where it negatively impacts their ability, even if short term, to do their work. The real changes can happen in the summer.

Actually some older projectors that I think came from LHS, but they're still good, small digital projectors.

I wanna get some HDMI ones though and put an Apple TV in every classroom to go with the teacher's iPads. Maybe next year ;)

@Corey said: I hate when schools block crap.... because they usually end up blocking 99% of the internet.

99% of the internet is crap.

Is this supposed to be an analogy? After reading it several times I think that's your intent.

    Google = "a leading newspaper"
Porn = "good news about a certain opposition party"

    Did I get it right?

If so it's the silliest analogy I've seen for a while. Google is not a publisher. It doesn't produce porn or control your access to it.
