It isn't the "best" or something, It's just that it only relies on nginx.
Made this some time ago, it got pretty popular.

Just seen this and I really laughed at WTFISMYIP "what a manner to handle you the address?" :P
But guess what I've been using one mentioned here which is ipChicken since 2005, perhaps several years older than that I'm not really sure! it's old and looks Google liked to show it at first search results.. The irony for me is that it has been always that simple, I almost didn't ever notice updates, except maybe adding ads and minor change maybe just once since I've seen it firstly, but in the other hand I've never found it offline which might be why they are busy from touching their homepage :P
BTW ipchicken isn't my favourite, but just has been stuck into it, my favorite are just all those with a map of location and complete details..etc, no specific one of them
It was already mentioned, but I use ipchicken.com as my go-to IP checker
I use whatismyownip.com or aboutmyip.com
such an old thread
but i usually use http://www.geoiptool.com/
and maxmind to check ip geo info
Thanks, I find http://wtfismyip.com/ strangely easy to recall when I need to know my IP
http://showip.net/
Quick and shows headers/ OS
http://canyouseeme.org - checks for transparent proxies pretty well when I tested

http://ip.facepwn.com/

Hosted on NodeDeploy, but I didn't make it
curl ifconfig.sh ftw
All I do is type in "What is my IP" in Google and it shows you right at the top of the results.
You are in China,right?
Wow, who knew there were so many, jeez
No love for telnet auto-responders?
IPv4:
telnet v4address.com
IPv6:
telnet v6address.com
+1. I think I have one of these on most of my websites

Check Proxy IP, Client IP,everything.. (less failure to detect IP Address)
http://whatismyipaddress.com/
@junjiang, nope.
@DewlanceVPS, it shows proxy IP, not the real client IP.
Hello,Mie Mie.
You use pxory IP? X-Forwarded-For?
I use ipchicken.com
It's a transparent proxy that the ISP imposed and there is no way to turn it off. There are ways around it though.
I like ifconfig.sh because curl ifconfig.sh returns your external IP, really useful
getenv("REMOTE_ADDR") ;
on my own domain.
