Looking for cheap dedicated server, or VPS with dedicated CPU and I/O

Hi all,

I'm looking for a very cheap dedicated server, or a VPS with dedicated CPU AND disk I/O (not sure whether such a thing exists with respect to the I/O?)

I'm a developer and want to host a personal project, which I know is going to be CPU and I/O intensive. I don't want it to impact any potential neighbours, and I suspect I/O would be the bottleneck on a VPS.

If a dedicated server, my budget isn't high as it's just an experimental project ($20/month absolute maximum) so I'd be happy with obsolete/low-end hardware (eg. Core2Duo or Atom). US location preferred, and plenty of bandwidth would be a plus.

Thanks in advance for any offers!

Delimiter and Dacentec are fairly popular dedicated server providers for that budget, Delimiter with 2xE5420's and Dacentec with Opteron's.

Otherwise you have some options out there like AbusiveCores and the likes that'll dedicate a core (or a thread) for your use only. But still I have a feeling the IO may be an issue even with services like these.

Have you got some rough figures on what you need, IO / CPU wise?

  • Tune up to dacentec's facebook page & you'll know when their Opteron will be in stock :)

  • Scaleway C1

It is ARM but you have 4 dedicated cores, 2GB RAM and 50GB storage for 3E/m

    Too bad its in France...

What sort of IOPS are you looking to achieve? 100MBs 200MBs more?

Unless you need good connectivity with US (which it doesn't have in terms of throughput), is there something else that bothers you about France for a dev machine? For production use, that's another story.

If connectivity to the U.S. and Asia wasn't an issue I'd be very interested, I hope they add more locations.

There's definitely a market for servers which can do long-running batch jobs and data crunching without bothering other users. I like VPSes for general web hosting, but in this case I'd rather have an underpowered server all to myself than a slice of a powerful server where I might annoy my neighbours.

  • Delimiter $20 dedi would be my pick if you're going to hammer the i/o. Also one of the best networks for the price point.

What specs are you looking for?

  • Our $20 server has Dual E5420, 8GB RAM, 500GB disk and gigabit uplink (5TB/month). Also has dedicated KVM and auto-provisioning.

On scaleway limiting factor for IOPS is gigabit network link speed.

SpeedyKVM apparently has dedicated resources on their KVM VPSes

  • just get 5x scaleway :D

I have had a great experience at ImbaHost. Their VPS are hosted on solid dedis (I think 2.93GHz core speed) with pure SSD RAID 10. Super affordable and never had a moment's downtime. They offer good dedicated options, too.

  • If you want just VPS with dedicated core then this is a good option:

    Dedicated X5650 Core, 1GB RAM, 40GB HDD, 1TB BW $6.50/mo

    https://clients.delimitervps.com/cart.php?a=add&pid=176

  • Alternatively, this dedicated server is being offered at another US company I trust:

    CPU: Intel Xeon X3460
    RAM: 4GB DDR3 ECC
    Hard Drive: 500GB SATA
    Uplink Port Speed: 100mbps
    Bandwidth: 10TB
    Operating System: CentOS 6.6 - 32 Bit
IP Addresses: 3 IPs (1 Usable)
    Network Attached Storage: 20gb NAS
KVM Over IP: IPMI 2.0 with integrated KVM over IP

    Slightly over $50/ month

You own that company so don't pretend to be a customer. Just fuck off with your spam.
