Our First Certificate Is Now Live
Sep 14, 2015 • Josh Aas, ISRG Executive Director
Let’s Encrypt passed another major milestone by issuing our first certificate. You can see it in action here.
Our cross signature is not yet in place, however this certificate is fully functional for clients with the ISRG root in their trust store. When we are cross signed, approximately a month from now, our certificates will work just about anywhere while our root propagates. We submitted initial applications to the root programs for Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, and Apple today.
We’re thrilled to finally be a live CA. We’ll be working towards general availability over the next couple of months by issuing certificates to domains participating in our beta program. You can request that your domain be included in our beta program by clicking here.

I never heard of it before but this is awesome news! Thanks for sharing.

I learned about this not so long ago, but lack general wisdom about the subject at large, so forgive any ignorance.
Free is good.
Who will pay for the infrastructure, and how about an SLA? Just thinking of big business who would want to ensure their certificates are valid 24/7/365. Surely if this gets popular then it's going to cost someone a lot of money/servers to service all the requests.
I think them will solve it,when it out.
Just smile to face it.(#^.^#)
They have some partners but the most expensive milestone is already completed.
The cost of maintaining the existing infrastructure isn't so big and raw processing power is probably the last of their concerns since a few servers are more than enough.
Sure, was thinking more wrt latency and redundancy.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the main challenge now is the root certification deployment speed.
This project was created by the EFF. I'm positive they will have no trouble funding this for years to come.
Since the certificates get cross-signed by an existing CA the deployment speed is not too much of an issue
That's the risk in the business of selling hot air
How to verify the link op posted is authentically connected to the official site? Not offending op, just being skeptical.
By going to https://letsencrypt.org/2015/09/14/our-first-cert.html and locating the same link there. facepalm
