Any cheap Linux VPS that's NOT with Colo Crossing?
Hi,
I have a 2GB RAM, 50GB drive, 2TB bandwidth package with ChicagoVPS right now that I'm fairly happy with and am paying a very good price for so can't complain too much. But I recently upgraded my home Internet to 50Mbps and the fastest transfer I can do from my home in Western Canada to the VPS in Los Angeles is around 20Mbps. Tried getting them to optimize the VPS and move it to different locations but can't get anywhere near my 50Mbps speed. Tried tests from another ISP in my location and can get close to 50Mbps on theirs. Also tried speed test from Server Mania and same issues there, confirmed they are also with Colo Crossing. Trying to find a cheap Linux VPS provider that's NOT hosted with Colo Crossing as I think the issue is peering or something between my ISP and them. Can anyone provide suggestions?
-thanks

Telus?
Try this and see if you fair any better http://hostigation.com/1GB.bin this is in Los Angeles
http://hostigation.com/100mb.bin for something a little smaller
Yes it's Telus, how'd you guess? I tried from Shaw and it works great. Contacted Telus and they said they can't do anything about it. Contacted ChicagoVPS and they keep moving server around but that's not going to help.
@midnyt What is your definition of cheap? OpenVZ or KVM?
We have a VPS location in Phoenix, AZ that might suit you well. Test IPs/files can be found at https://vapornode.com
It's a little better at just over 20Mbps using my home DSL on Telus, even though at speedtest.net I'm getting 55Mbps. Tried with a Shaw connection and it's 50Mbps on a 60Mbps link. There's definitely something messed up with Telus and peering to the US
So you want a VPS, that's cheap, and not colo crossing...
Ramnode, BuyVM, OVH, DigitalOcean, Vultr.
Do note:
If you spent half the time you did writing this you would of found a huge list of non-cc providers already.
I'm paying $30/year right now for OpenVZ
Tried http://lg.phx.vapornode.com and getting a blank page
Try Seattle. LA is too far away for max speed.
We have great KVM plans in Phoenix, Arizona. They are DDoS protected and RAID10 SSD.
Let me know if you would like a looking glass link.
https://ssdblaze.com/vps/
I can offer 2GB with 120GB SSD 1IPv4 DDoS protected IP for about 20$ monthly, your welcome to check us out and ping check if you need.
Feel free to take a look https://igniteservers.com
Well maybe the issue isn't CC then. Tried speed test from the Ramnode looking glass and got 17Mbps. BuyVM is 16. Can't find speed test for OVH. Digital Ocean is 21. Vultr is 20.
Just wish I knew what the issue was or how to get it fixed. I'd switch to Shaw but I'm getting a great deal from Telus right now and locked in a 3 year contract with another 2 to go.
I tried Seattle with Ramnode and Vultr - got 24 with Ramnode 21 with Vultr all while getting 51 on speedtest.net. Tried Ramnode and Vultr on Shaw and got 54Mbps to both ... go figure!
I'm able to push 50mbps on my telus line from Vultr Seattle. Are you just using browser? Probably want to use some multi-connection download program for max speed.
Wow, really? I've tried both browser and wget, never over 22Mbps. Even my trace route to Vultr looks amazing, can't figure out WTF is going on with the throughput

Sounds like Telus has sub optimal routing. Right now I get faster speeds to the West coast using a server in Atlanta to route there.
Yes please
20 ms to Seattle? I get 9ms. And no I cant get 50mbps with browser, I need some sort of downloader. Last time I checked, wget is single connection program which means it won't get you 50mbps.
I'm using wget with Telus at home and with Shaw at the other site in Vancouver I'm testing with to keep things consistent. Trace route from Shaw is 23ms and I'm able to get 54Mbps using wget. Should be able to do the same with Telus.
That's not the case. Wget isn't the tool to test download speed. There are so many factors to why the download speed is slow, peering is one of them. Telus is having serious issues with its peering and routing (I get routed to Chicago cloudflare server instead of Seattle). If you just want to see the numbers then you won't see it. But if you want to get the speed, then try a real download program that can utilize 5-10 connections. Besides 20Mbps is more than enough for anything, why do you need 50? Download illegal torrents via VPN?
The "issue" is most likely with your isp, though to be honest your results for a single threaded download seem perfectly good for a home is connection.
But if I'm using wget on Shaw and getting 50Mbps on a 60Mbps link I should be able to use the same tool on Telus and get similar results, shouldn't matter if it's multiple connections or not. I also added a Speed Test Mini app to one of my old VPS, can you see what you get when you go to http://198.23.161.227:81/mini/. I get around 12 to that but the official http://speedtest.net gets me around 51. Another test that's similar which should get me similar results.
Yes 20Mbps is enough, but I'm paying for 50 so should be getting reasonably close to that with a site that's reasonably close to me that I can get with another provider. I use it for VPN and as soon as I turn it on my effective speed goes from 50 to 20 so I'm trying to figure out what's wrong so I can get what I'm paying for.
You paid for 50 and telus gave you 50.
Yup, to http://www.speedtest.net - great deal
Hahaha. Yeah, this isn't a peering/routing issue, this is a cost saving measure. So much Shaw traffic goes back east because it's cheaper for them to route through Toronto + Chicago vs. Seattle. They've got much bigger commitments out there so they get better pricing. I wouldn't be surprised if Telus did the same.
Well, did a bunch more troubleshooting and put my router in bridge mode. Found out that when I get a 50.92.x.x IP address I can get full speeds like I'm supposed to from the various tests I was running earlier. However if I get a 216.232.x.x IP it drops in half - figure that one out! Problem is I can't force myself to get a 50.92.x.x IP and DHCP keeps giving me a 216.232.x.x now. Time to call Telus and find out what's going on here. Very strange.
Yea I've had that with Shaw before, but Telus is different. If someone pays for cloudflare I'm able to get Seattle server, free plans all go to Chicago. Seems like a cloudflare issue.
Run an mtr to both IPs from your VPS and see which routes they take. If they're different, see if you can contact support and get them to replicate the good route.
Yup, looks like one hop is different. The one using AboveNet is slow and the one using NLayer is fast. Seeing if ChicagoVPS can get ColoCrossing to change the route ... fingers crossed

I noticed that you are in Western Canada. Do you get better results if you download from OVH's datacenter in Canada? Here's a 100MB file just for testing: http://mon-ca.verelox.com/100mb.img
