[Survey] General vs Special

I wish to know your two cents about company strategies regarding being specialist vs. generalist.

By specialist, I mean a company who is only selling VPS for instance. And by generalist, I refer to those who provide a wide range of services (Domain,Hosting,VPS,Cloud,Dedicated etc.)

Does it have any effect on your choice? If so, which way is it?

If you could share any past experience it could be also helpful.

  • As long as their prices are good and I know that they have someone who is knowledgeable in that field (who won't screw up) then I'm fine.

E.g. IPXCore has Shared Hosting+Domain Registration, VPS, and SSLs. I know for a fact that Damian knows how to manage Dedicated Servers with VPSes, Shared Hosting, (Honestly Domain Name Registration I always take care of with my regular company) and SSL certificates.

Now, if it was a company that sold VPSes and also made/delivered spaghetti, then I'd feel a bit iffy.

But I'm sure after talking with a support tech/owner for a little bit and knowing what their knowledge level is, I'm sure I'd know if they're good for hosting.

Totally unrelated, if anyone wants to start a VPS company that also delivers spaghetti, I'd buy from you.

A diversified company feels more reliable long-term (and it might well be indeed), but a specialist provider is likely to be more competent at their core service.

Does not really affect choice much.

These are all very inter-related and can be lumped together as "a web host".

On the other hand, when a provider also has a branch which sells ADSL or FTTH lines in their home city, or when they are a satellite internet provider, or do VoIP, or CDN, etc then that's a multi-service provider.

  • I prefer slightly more general special hosts. For example I like Media Temple who has shared hosting, VPS's, and then dedicated servers. They are able to do everything well and it's great.

On the other hand hosts like GoDaddy are a little crazy with all kinds of hosting, all kinds of domains, SSL, web design, and so on. They are able to offer overall pretty average/slightly below average services.
