  • Yep, forget it. Not going to happen.

http://leader112.com/ is by far the cheapest (check their ebay auctions) but even an old HP DL360/180/120 runs you at 250EUR+ without any HDDs.

There was a user before some time was selling servers at $150

    Yeah, without shipping.

Yes, X5110 and alike from US - Useless hardware, first you pay 100$+ for shipping to EU, then you pay at least another 40EUR in import fees and tax, then you have a useless Xeon that uses 250W power for similar performance to HALF an i7 that uses 70W....

At our power pricing it makes ZERO sense to run anything lower than L5520 here and even that is already barely useful.

    Thank you.
As I know you are housing servers at home, how much power it uses a server? Wien energie prices.

  • WIen Energie charges 8,2807cent/kwh (up to 3500kwh/yr or so) before Netzentgelt which is somewhere around 4c - Totals to 12,2807cents/kwh, with all the other fees around 16-19c/kwh is realistic.

A single CPU L5520 uses around 120W in full load with 4 HDDs and like 8 sticks RAM - Thus this would cost around 16EUR/month to run.

    For comparsion:

    (Single) L5520 (60W)

    32GB RAM (4x8) (40W)

    4TB HDD (2x2) (20W)

    ~120W / 16EUR

    4357 CPU Benchmark Points - 16000/4357 = 3,672251549c/benchmark point

    i7-3770 (77W)

    32GB RAM (4x8) (40W)

    4TB HDD (2x2) (20W)

    ~137W / 18EUR

    9366 CPU benchmark points - 18000/9366 = 1,921844971c/benchmark point

You see the i7 is over double the performance of an L5520 at not even 15% more power usage.

    Thank you William!

  • If you're going to buy cheap old servers, keep them in the states with the dirt cheap power and colo deals. If you want cheap old servers in the EU, rent them. If you're buying stuff to keep at home or colo - buy newer, powerful & power efficient gear as William suggested.

It's a similar power situation where I am in Canada. I'm looking at E3s & i7's to colo locally/run at home. It's not worth server cost + shipping + import duties + monthly costs. Instead of 2-3 cheap boxes, get 1 newer one that is more powerful than the cheap ones combined.

i would choose Geekbench (http://browser.primatelabs.com/) for more better results. in which case the L5520 is very old and weak

Pretty much the same result as CPU Benchmark % difference wise:

    L5520 - 1600

    i7-3770 - 3100

  • @William , you seems to be closely familiar with co-location. Can i ask few noob questions about it?
