Perfomance issues

msanamsana Member

I'm having an issue with my vps (network/performance related) and I would like to ask if these values from a couple of tests are still in the "ok" zone.
So, once I have logged in from ssh, I notice a couple of "hiccups" whenever doing the usual edits/actions. e.g. when I type

nano nix.php

it takes a couple of seconds to actually open nano. The file itself has only

phpinfo();

in addition to the php tags in it. After opening a file with vi or nano, when deleting a couple of words off the file it kinda sticks and I end up deleting more than I wanted when I can do anything on it.

So I went ahead and did the usual tests to rule out the usual suspects i.e. network, disk-io or memory issues.

What do you think? Should I be worried of the packet losses? Do the packet losses make my editors in ssh lag?

Thank you for your help

  • It depends where this server is located. If its in Outer Mongolia then its pretty good performance, if its USA, Europe then its pretty slow.

If your SSH doesn't lag while you hold down "a" key, then it won't lag when you open editor. It's almost certainly the disk being bottleneck. dd test doesn't tell you much though, try timing apt-get install [somepackage] (somehow you should ignore the download time though) and compare it to another VM.

Edit: but you also said you delete more than you want to, which indicates there IS some lag in your SSH session, which would point to network issue.

IO and cpu clock speed quiet slow.

The server is in Texas US. I'm in Berlin Germany

There is a lag when I hold down "a" key. The lag in the editor is quite annoying though

Yeah, I was also surprised to see those values. Hadn't quite noticed them from day one.

Ok then it is probably combination of I/O slow and network slow. It's unclear from the mtr where the issue lies.

  • The network throughput is a little sucky, the IO performance looks slow and as @budi1413 said the CPU speed is also slow.

Is this a reputable supplier? Or just a very oversold box?

    It's ip-systems-limited.

Here is a more comprehensive report from one month ago

Hmm, now that you ask it does sound like an oversell.

  • I don't know the vendor but there are a few threads on here. What do you pay for that server per month?

It is a lowendbox just used as a sandbox. I pay €3.5/year

  • For that price, I think its definitely a good deal.

I do own another lowendbox on another host in jacksonville. The i/o speeds are in the mid 400MB/s and network is almost double of what I'm getting here :/

  • €3.5/year barely covers the IP/Network costs. They probably get €3 by the time they've paid the payment fees and one support ticket and that €3 is gone.

More than likely that 400MB/s server hasn't filled up yet, maybe that company hasn't been as successful at selling.

Perfect example of "you get what you pay for"

well with whatever stats they are giving out ads for, the i/o should at least be better than what they have right now.

  • what of iostat?

  • I've had that kind of delay with a $4/yr VPS, and then it got better after a while. I don't think a provider can guarantee much regularity and speed for that price. Why not get a second LEB and compare?

I already have another leb from another provider. never had the said issues. I will just file a ticket and see how this goes.
