I've only ever had Seagate drives fail on me. My recent replacement arrived broken and I've had to invest a lot of time in order to be able to get it replaced.
So, I'm sorry, but you're not going to convince me. So far, all Seagate's I've owned have been utter crap and customer support has been poor. Also, they officially do not support Linux according to their support department...
What?
@mpkossen What is the Model of the Seagate drives you have used?
drooling
my experience too, mostly. for enterprise drives that is
I was running a NAS on a seagate and faced the same. (home nas)
Had constant failures with Western Digital ... tons of data loss.
If you want to be able to complain on forums, like a boss, about drive failures and data loss -
choose Western Digital.
If you care about data and performance, you make the best choice with Seagate ES Enterprise Series.
Drives can fail regardless of the model. We have used Seagate ES.3's for many years and continue to do so because of the performance, reliability, and incredibly low failure rates. We're not defending that they don't fail as every hard drive can, but surely you guys aren't using these specific models (Constellation ES.3).
Yeah. I was using some old model. I don't think seagate is a bad brand but they need to think about commercial level customer also.
From my own experience ES.3 perform really well and are more reliable than WD, however your basic desktop grade seagate is utter crap compared with the WD equivalent.
But of course everyone has a story when it comes to drive reliability.
I've never had a problem with WD blacks. I have one that's about 6 to 7 years ago and it is still going strong as a laptop drive.
The 3 desktop WD blacks I've used have been great all 4 years old and on 24x7.
Although.....the re3 from WD and the 2 re4 I've used have all failing sectors past the threshold. And failed out of raid all within 1 year.. even replacements. If for enterprise drives.
So WD blacks for me.
@QuadraNet_Adam May I ask where do you tend to buy your hardware from? Mainly the HDD's?
I just read that wrong.
Ebay Auctions...
where else would a real business buy HDDs from?
Distributors... ASI/MALabs, etc.
that's generally the 3TB< and every seagate drive ive had that's failed was made in china
the 4TB ones seem very reliable.
stack of server or stack porn would be appreciate. nice!
I suppose that this is for me. Well yes, when you have cash and you don't need credit line or financing you go where it is cheaper. I don't see issue in that, but i am sure that you will find one for me
I would beg to differ at least from a real business/datacenter standpoint. For example we do not have a line of credit nor financing, this is purchased 100% outright and we build our servers in-house & on-site. We are 100% debt-free and privately owned, but that doesn't mean we settle for the cheaper hardware... in fact quite the opposite, we only purchase enterprise hardware as you can already tell.
However I realize and understand your perspective coming from a LEB provider standpoint and a growing small business. Have definitely seen that multiple times throughout my 8+ years in this industry, every business has to start somewhere. A prime example of this is I've seen time and time again multiple web hosting providers who colocate with us, who went from 1 rack filled with used eBay hardware to growing to dozens of cabinets and eventually exclusively purchasing only brand new & top of the line servers. Every business eventually reaches a maturity point and when is able to afford newer/enterprise hardware they will do so for the sake of quality and keeping clients happy.
If cheaping out on some hardware works out for you and that's how you prefer to operate your business, then all the best to you. Unfortunately, when providers choose to go that route and cheap out on operating expenses like hardware, 99% of the time it's the consumer who ends up being affected in a negative manner, but if you're able to make it work out in everyone's favor then I give you props for that.
To each their own We'll stick with our brand new enterprise hardware. More hardware including some more S3710 SSD's and DDR4 RAM incoming later this week. I'll share pics with you guys accordingly.
I would never trust any Seagate consumer rated drive either (ie. the Barracuda's). Wouldn't even think about using it for my personal computer at home or at the office.
I too had a poor experience with the Seagate Barracuda's in the past and that left me with a general negative taste about Seagate as a company for a very long time. Until I've actually worked with servers utilizing the Constellation ES.3, then I've learned to just steer away from the Barracudas, and I'll admit the ES.3's definitely changed my opinion about Seagate as a company. I would take an ES.3 Constellation over an RE4 anyday (having used and tested both)
Hi Adam, I didn't say that you are doing something wrong, also i didn't say that that you are offering bad hardware. Honestly i like your network, professionalism and hardware. We host 5 nodes in your LA DC via @Onrahost.
Now, thank you for best wishes, i wish you same. You are my #1 choice for LA.
Regarding ES.3 over RE4, all that i have said is that i like RE4 more because none died yet at any of our deployments and i agree that ES.3 is faster.
We have used a ton of both types of drives.
We've RMAed a lot more to Western Digital than Seagate.
HGST and Western Digital's RMA process are also a bit like gambling. There is a good chance you will end up with a WD Blue in exchange for an RE4 or Black if they don't have inventory available of the exact model number you are returning. HGST is the same way, but you end up with one of the Deskstar drives.
Can't say we've ever seen that happen with WD. Certainly bad luck
Barracuda mostly.
The Western Digital stock of older enterprise disks seems to be low lately. On my last 3 WD failures, the disk was 3 or 4 years old and was obviously not in the current WD product portfolio anymore. I never got back the same part from the RMA. The latest one has been the most random: I sent a 2.5'' and they sent back a 3.5'' replacement, same capacity. On the previous one, I sent a single disk and they sent back two completely different disks. The process is fast, at least. I don't put back in service the replacement disks anyway - only God knows the history of those refurbished parts. I use them as Emergency spare/testing.
I agree that the Seagate RMA process is better. The best of all, on my experience, is the Intel SSD RMA process (for Intel partners): they send a perfectly good retail disk next day, before getting back the faulty part. They can afford it because the failure rate is so low. I used it only twice.
Seagate vs. WD debate aside, here are some quick pictures that I just took of our latest shipment received today. This has been provided by me directly to your computer screen for your enjoyment and entertainment

If any of you guys are interested to see more please let me know - we still have a lot of unboxing to do as you can already tell... if there is enough demand for my #serverporn service, I can continue to do my best to share more pics with you guys as time allows. But this should be more than enough for now?
In addition let me know if there is anything else you guys would like to see from a datacenter's perspective... we operate our own datacenters so whether you'd like to see more server pictures or if you'd like to see something datacenter related - just ask, we have an open ear. We are also open to suggestions on what YOU would like to see on our YouTube channel. Your feedback is important and every request will be taken into consideration!
Keep'em coming.
Always enjoy seeing pictures from a DC of any kind
I'll have "Server/Datacenter Porn Part 3" coming soon for you guys, which will be even more epic, but in the meantime - follow us on our Instagram page which is updated with new photos everyday so you can get your daily dose of #serverporn
