ARIN gets another surprise 3x /8's! Policy changes to RIPE-like, pay to receive, no justification!

224.0.0.0/4 is not likely to be ever used. Too many systems have it hard coded that this space is not routeable. If it is ever opened up for use, I suspect it would be for RFC 1918-type space.

Most mobile phones support IPv6 natively.

    Right, exactly, that was my point. I don't see any other reserved space;
    http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space/ipv4-address-space.xhtml

So I'm just curious (and hopeful) as to which reserved space jbiloh expects to be released.

I agree but...there are other motivations.

The only space currently reserved is in the IANA recovered pool:
    http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-recovered-address-space/ipv4-recovered-address-space.xhtml

ARIN will get some more space from that pool in September, but ARIN will likely be out before then. Anything ARIN gets will go straight to the waiting list, so it won't likely really provide much relief.

I agree. When IPv4 ends, its will be trouble some. But masses dont know whats IPv4. Tech / Internet companies will face the issue with the transition to IPv6.

2 more /15s recently were assigned to egihosting and pschyz. Getting really low now!

    0.04 /8 left

  • rds100rds100 Member

0.01 /8s left now. Let's call it a day and have an ipv6 party.

Where did the last bit go to?

A bunch of small assignments here and there. http://lists.arin.net/pipermail/arin-issued/2015-June/002386.html
There was not much left to begin with.

KW Datacenter got a /15 today. That was the big one.

  • jbilohjbiloh Administrator, Veteran

That's 3 x /15s in 24 hours. Some very lucky companies to get those last minute subnets.

    Finally.

  • KW Datacenter? As in CloudAtCost..?

It takes a while to transition. After all this is done it would be a great graduate thesis for someone to see why it has taken so long...

How is it over when that site says?:

The ARIN IPv4 Countdown Plan is in Phase 4, and we will continue working in Phase 4 as we move toward full depletion of ARIN's available IPv4 inventory.

There are only /23s and /24s left. If you want a /23 or /24, you can probably still get one.

They will keep enough and even claw back some if needed to make sure people can put up tunnels between 6 and 4.

There is a /10 reserved for purposes related to migration to IPv6 that is separate from the main pool.

    And that's all she wrote...

Time to wait for the IANA space. I expect ARIN will have some givebacks soon, too.

that is gonna be a long wait. ARIN squandered their space, they gave way more per capita than in any other area, the speculators will now step in and prices will stay well below RIPE or APNIC anyway. So, why would ARIN get something more?

    Plus the recovered arin space.

jbiloh said: Plus the recovered arin space.

Depends on how they recover it. Some of the recovered space has to be returned to IANA.

Which ARIN space has to be returned to IANA?
