Cheap VPS in Japan with specific needs

Hello!

I need a very special VPS in Japan, mainly for ping.

What do I need is a VPS with ping around 140ms to this IP: 81.177.32.76

Most VPS I found won't fit this. The only one who seems to fit is cloudcore.jp, but I couldn't register here, even with help of a person living in Japan - it's mostly b2b, and they require the first payment made by bank transfer.

Somewhat acceptable also feels the https://svc.clara.jp/service/flexmini2/index.htm, but the minimum plan is way too expensive 10079 yens is around 80 dollars per month.

A 10-20 dollars per month is pretty much acceptable, the specs are mostly unimportant (even a really low end will do), it should just be able to work with OpenVPN. Even if it doesn't I think I can find a way to still use it.

  • Actually Linode would also be great, sad that they are all sold out

Did you check Ablenet (http://ablenet.jp/vps/index_en.html)? In my experience this one currently is more likely to utilize direct routes to Russia than some others.

You seem to have services in RTCOMM (Rostelecom Moscow branch). It would be somewhat difficult to obtain a latency of under 140ms from Rostelecom in Moscow via NTT. It may be possible through KDDI.

To your test IP (Moscow), ping is only ~40ms.

If the physical location of Japan is not important, virtual servers in Rostelecom Siberia may be more suitable.

I'm not spamming, I said that "If the physical location of Japan is not important..."

OK, I've removed link, so now my feedback is just on the routing :)
Don't expect a optimal latency from either NTT or IIJ routing! Only KDDI will be around 130-140ms to Moscow.

  • Actually, the JP location is very important to me - I need a japaneese exit IP.

Also, clara.co.jp routes are also acceptable, not only KDDI (but well they also goes through the KDDI route, but still as a matter of fact). But well, cloudcore IS located in KDDI, but sadly enough see first post.

I tested VULTR and Ablenet - not good. Any other options?

See my list of Japanese providers. Also check the "unlisted" category, there might be some which will be fine for you, but excluded mostly due to the price.

Can you trace from the RTCOMM IP? Try www.kagoya.jp.

Still going through the iij.net routes

Used that as base, thanks for your hard work though ^^ Anyway haven't got any luck in testing, but maybe I missed something.

  • Using linode at Tokyo with 127.356ms average ping to your given IP, FYI.
But currently they seems to have no slots at Tokyo node.

Yeah, a Linode would be perfect... But yeah I confirmed, they are out of stock.

Also going through iij.net route, like all GMO services.

I checked them before also. Maybe you know something which I couldn't find?

  • Even tried LowEndSpirit one, in case there would be a miracle... Well, no miracle. They're using the vultr services.

You could try Sakura at $5~ a month but there is setup fee.

    http://vps.sakura.ad.jp/

It would be through KDDI from Rostelecom. However, foreign customers may have problems paying or require verification but I have never used them before.

So if you could find a VPS provider in Moscow who primarily uses RETN, you could use that as a jump point to reach either Kagoya or Ablenet.

Sakura isn't the worst, but ping 180 isn't enough

  • Seems that thanks to @rm_ I found my silver bullet. I'll use firstvds.ru as a proxy point and a vps.sakura.ad.jp exit point. Seems legit after all.

You could also try http://www.nqhost.com/, from tracing the old subnet where I once had a VPS with them (46.38.62.1), they use RETN too. However they may still have the upload bandwidth limit of 30 Mbit max per VPS.

And it's where it starts getting tricky... Not so easy to find a sakura-housed VPS. http://www.hyper-cloud.jp/ is housed in Sakura DC by the way, but they require a verification (like "send your ID scan by fax or email"). Do you know any other?

If you're on RETN from the Russia side, couldn't you just use Ablenet or Kagoya in Japan, as per traceroutes posted above? Or the ping of 143 is still too high?

Yeah. I need every little bit of ping here. 143 vs 135, Sakura wins ^^

  • Well, trying ablenet for now, but it seems the ping is still too high - I mean the final ping (why the ping is important - I need a low ping from Moscow to one server in Japan, so I'm doing an OpenVPN "proxy"). Sakura (or hyper-cloud.jp) should be perfect, but how to register on it...

  • I can buy cloudcore.

    Anyway, a little update.

I ended up registering on hyper-cloud.jp. They actually accept international orders - I registered with TENSO - BUT they require to send a passport or other ID with photo to send them. I sent them my international passport (the one you use in airports) - and they accepted it.

As a reminder - hyper-cloud is hosted in Sakura DC, which gives me a pretty good and stable ping. So there IS actually a way to register in Sakura DC.

@qibinghua - If you can resell me them, I think I can test it, but before it I would like to extensively test the connectivity, can you give me some guest access by ssh (no root needed, only hping3 and traceroute installed, I'll use about no bandwidth at all) so I can check everything?
