IP reputation. What can I expect on LEB?

I got a VPS a few days ago and notice in the /var/log/apache2 logs that the IP is getting hammered with solid porn requests. About 3,000 per hour and 100% porn. This would presumably be an indication of the previous owner's use. Anyway, it's not slowing down.
Is this something which I should be concerned about? I'm thinking this will impact my ability to use this server for much. Likely not a VPN, and certainly e-mail won't be accepted from there. I checked on several "reputation sites", and the IP rank is negative.

Is this usual for a LEB account? Should I request a new IP?

Probably more rare than usual, I'd go ahead and just request a new one if you can. You might of had a new one already if you wrote this as a ticket! :)

It depends. We monitor carefully and have no more than a handful out of 10 k blacklisted at any time. Others do not really care and hand them out like candy, especially in US, so...

Yes, most hosts will allow you a new IP no problems - even a few CC hosts i use now assign clean IP's!

Actually some people would be very glad to get free porn related traffic. They'd put a redirector to a different porn website, injecting their own affiliate code and profit.

  • Thanks for the comments guys. I don't like to bother a Low End host too much, but I did ask for a new IP just now, and got it. I must say that RamNode gives quick support, even for their cheapest VPS.

With the new IP the traffic stopped and I checked some reputation sites and there's no history. I think this is better for me.

@rds100 I haven't been into making money off the web, but you're quite right - I should have redirected it to somewhere. 3,000 hits per hour ought to be worth something. If you're interested, order something from RamNode and ask for 168.235.64.126.

Order it, sign up for a HackForums account, sell it, profit.

I'm sure that Nick will be glad that his servers are sold on HFs.

No offense, but didn't he used to advertise there? It could have been one of his past hosts, something that was also related to Minecraft IIRC

I would welcome free traffic, I would've redirect it elsewhere.

    No... Seriously?

No, but IIRC @AlexBarakov used to

Yes, this is true, especially due to the fact that CC has gotten over 75% of their SpamHaus listings removed (a feat in of itself!)

Spamhaus is realizing a lot of their tactics aren't winning over abuse departments in resolving issues for Spamhaus' paying customers. Just so people remember, Spamhaus sells a service and their fighting of spam is part of that business.

Are you saying that SpamHaus removing listings is not pleasing abuse departments?

I doubt that, from what I saw, their model is based on removing some spammers and not their competition which probably pays good money. We do have blacklistings from many people and only in about half the cases spamhaus zen lists them too, from what i saw barracuda is the most reliable and impartial.

It is possible, though, that, lately, spamming business to be much less lucrative than before, so the market is not so awash with money, crooks make more money with ransomware and fake antivirii, not to mention identity and IP theft through botnets and whatnot. Spamhaus might reconsider and finally side with the legit customers.
