Not FTP but with FUSE driver similarly convenient. From quick look I had at source, it looks like HTTPS internally.

I would not try any free services for backup, from what I read when they are ad supported they get touchy if people don't get to see ads:

they also scan your files, and mediafire is quite slow.
It's an option, nobody mentioned it. Encrypt the backups and upload in the background, so speed may not matter. Also maximum 20GB per file.
I have two synced physical location and MF will be used only as the 3rd in case both locations fail at the same time. Personally would not trust online backup as sole backup solution.
Time4VPS is good, €20/year for 500GB storage.
