  • Can whatever you are running make proper use of multiple threads?

  • Probably the 2 E5-1620 v2 cores

It is an 8 year old game that does well with CPUs with better single thread performance.

E5-1620v2 is more powerful on all fronts -- multi threaded and single threaded - easy to see that from a quick google search...

Your game wont be able to use the 2 or 3 cores -- just 1 core -- so go with the E5-1620v2.

  • both are quite weak. i would go for a E3 CPU those E5's offer terrible single thread performance but offer good multi thread

    ????

What are you talking about? E5-1600 single thread is more powerful than E3-1200 single thread.

The E5-1600 series is what all the minecrafters want because of their powerful single threaded performance.

are you blind Chris? or can you not read. clearly i am talking about CPU's

ow and i run Game Servers for several games (including Homefront) very demanding for single thread performance.

    e5

  • The E5 would be better for single threaded performance.

Yeah, let me know how an E3 single threaded is more powerful then an E5-1600v2 single threaded.

I must be BLIND or you must be CLUELESS.
I would hate to be one of your gameserver clients on your underperforming E3's.

  • E5-1620v2 for example has almost twice the memory throughput of E3-1231v3, can access more RAM and supports quad channel. More L3 cache, etc

    Downside with E5-1620v2 more power/cooling.

my E3's perform better than MOST E5's for single thread work.

for comparison am using http://browser.primatelabs.com/ & cpu benchmark list

    you are blind & clueless.

you asked the following "What are you talking about? "

am sorry but the whole thread is about CPU's (as shown above) you must be silly not to understand this.

Uh, seriously, what are you talking about? @ItsChrisG was aware from the beginning that this topic was discussing CPU's, and was aware that your comment was about CPU's, in fact his comment that you keep quoting specifically responding to things you said about CPU single-threaded performance.

Perhaps you should read it again? http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/964665/#Comment_964665

No need to yell at each other though, seems like just misunderstanding?

  • +1 for E5

Let's be on topic. Passmark score listed here.

    • 2,181 Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3 @ 3.40GHz
    • 1,916 Intel Xeon E5-1620 v2 @ 3.70GHz
    • 1,192 Intel Xeon W3520 @ 2.67GHz

    Clear enough?
