VPS + Security + Provider + Help

So this is the thing.

I need to host a web page (no shared hosting). It must be on a VPS with 512MB - 1GB RAM, 15GB - 20GB HDD/SSD, 1 - 2CPU/Core.

But it must be secure (of course verything ca be hacked) but it must be good uptime (offered by the provider).

The web page only static files (wordpress or ghost in a future).

For security: DDoS or DoS protection sure.

I was thinking on:

  1. Go for a LET like securedragon, buyvm, ramnode or other and just be happy.

  2. Go for digitalocean, vultr or other and worry about security thinking how to make it secure..

What can you recomend ?

BTW The period of time is for 2 years and the money is $300.

Thanks

What makes you think Digitalocean/vultr are not secure? No matter which provider you use, you always need to do some security hardening.

You may want to look for a managed host if you do not know how to secure your server. DDoS protection is great, but it doesnt provide you "security", it just provides you availability.

Well DO, Vultr dont offer DDoS protection.

Also other things like secure ports, password, authentication and so is all up to me.

Then if I go to DO what can I do in order to stop for amoment a DDoS problem?

For static web pages you can host them on Amazon S3, with their static website hosting feature. They have powerful servers and you don't have to worry about DDoS protection and auto scaling. Or check out GitHub pages.

Put Cloudfront or Cloudflare in front of S3, and you also get SSL and a great CDN.

Well The thing is that S3 doesnt give a lof ot crontol and static pages will be only for a couple of months then it will cahnge to wordpress or ghost, not sure is all up to the developer.

  • Hi @martip07

I invite you to consider VaporNode in your search for a VPS provider. We can provide a plan with your requested specifications well within your budget on either OpenVZ or KVM located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

We utilize a custom control panel that provides a web interface to manage a firewall placed in front of your VPS so you can easily manage some form of the security in place on your server. It also includes free DNS hosting/management for up to 25 domains.

Furthermore, we provide basic DDoS protection that is perfect for most websites.

Our services are in a high availability configuration meaning we have seamless, automatic failover on all network and hosting hardware. If a part of us goes down, you will not.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

    Regards

If your website will use Ghost and does not change frequently, you can just download all static html files using e.g. wget or "buster" (static website builder for Ghost blog), and upload them to S3.

On my blog (in sig) you can find a detailed Ghost install guide with Nginx and ModSecurity.

Actually not a bad idea. How much are ou paying for S3 service?

  • @martip07 said:

Well, personally I pay less than a dollar per month. However, for you it would depend on your S3 bucket size and number of HTTP and HTTPS requests, etc. Refer to their detailed pricing page.

  • If your new to administrating VPS's I'd highly recommend installing CentMinMod on a barebone OS, Like centos 6 minimal.

    http://centminmod.com/

Install CentMinMod, then disable password based authentication and use SSH Keys.

CentMinMod takes care of a lot of the security related things for you and sets up various rules.

Should be the easiest way to go for a beginner.

Okay. I'd highly recommend RamNode (Seattle Location is best for DDOS as it's CNServers) or BuyVM.

Both have solid performance, uptime and DDOS protection.

When anything goes wrong, and you need support, you can pretty much bet on a response to your ticket in less than 30 minutes from someone knowledgeable.

I've been using those two for over 2 years now.

I've never used SecureDragon so I wont comment on them.

  • DigitalOcean does in fact have DDoS protection :-)

    Since when?

No one knows the details, but I'm pretty sure they end up nulling IP's for a while.

  • I can offer you something like this within your budget.
If your interested drop me a visit @ mrapidhost.com

  • Well, I decided to go with DO.

And will do some haproxy and firewall for protection.

Heres what you can do put 2x OVH servers for load balancing , cloudflare for that extra 1gbps of mitigation and then send clean bandwidth on a DO vps ( just a hunch 512 wont be enough depending on your site ) . As for a webserver setup you could go with nginx php-fpm mysql and then for security hardening there is a script for centos from limestonenetworks https://www.limestonenetworks.com/support/knowledge-center/7/83/hardening_centos.html
