Community LookingGlass.

Hey!

I've been tinkering around with LookingGlass for a while and I wondered if it would be worth while coming up with a community based LookingGlass website.

Basically, having multiple LG installations spread across different providers (if they'd be willing to 'sponsor' a VPS) – you'd be able to select a destination and off you go.

I'm willing to deploy a Linode instance in all their locations; Newark (East), Atlanta (South), Dallas (Central), Fremont (West), London (UK) and Tokyo (when available).

Or, if you lot have some idea(s)/input, feel free!

Once upon a time there was a Lowendbox Wiki (http://wiki.lowendbox.com/)
where we collected a list of provider LGs: http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/9392/let-s-make-a-lowendlookingglass-list
Of course that's all gone now, because who needs such a silly thing as a wiki, and nevermind the links to it are still active in the right-hand side navigation on LET and LEB.

  • I noticed the above when I did a search; but I'm thinking more of a single-site (domain) project.

So, you'd go to http://something.glass and select from a list of location and/or provider(s) and it'll load up that LG installation within the same site.

A few trusted ol' folk would be able to remove/add new locations incase a provider closes down shop (as often happens).

  • I can see providers coming back to you and saying we host our own so we don't need abother, then being concerned incase it was a used, rightly so I guess... The idea is good but most providers have their own LG so I can see them not wanting to support it I guess

  • A better solution which would likely get you sponsored VPS's would be to have ONE User accessible LookingGlass installation which would then connect to each of the LookingGlass nodes. So you'd enter the IP you want to ping and you get the results from all the locations within the same LookingGlass instead of having 100 and 1 links to an installation for each location. Much like http://startping.com/ but with the option to run traceroutes and mtr's...

  • I fully understand and appreciate that, which is why I started this thread, I just think a community powered one-stop place for LG is a good idea, I've no problem allowing a small banner ad for providers, say if x host sponsors a node, and a user uses that node, display a banner ad for that provider (without clogging up the UI).

  • The way I imagined it to be wouldn't be links to LG installations, rather a list of providers and/or locations that you could select and it'll load said installation within the same page, rather than off-site.

So, you'd go to https://something.glass, select the location and/or provider, and it'd load https://atlanta.linode.something.glass/ within the index/main page, which would also allow you to just link someone to https://atlanta.linode.something.glass/ to load up that specific installation straight away.

I'm noting down your ideas and I'm looking into the multi-point LG, to allow requests to go to every node and return the result.

    Exactly that, thanks for sharing...

  • OK; after sleeping on this; it makes sense from a UI point of view to simple allow you to check which server/location/provider and perform the test (on multiple nodes).
