smart is dumb. but lacie is really good. a little expensive, tho
isnt lacie just a brand name for the cheap china clone's?
I've used Synology and QNAP, both excellent.
I've been using a QNAP 4x2TB Raid 6, and have had 0 issues. I'd recommend the ARM ones over the x86 ones, as they are much quieter and cooler.
um.no?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaCie
qnap is pretty good too.
Am looking at this one as an upgrade http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/D-LINK-dns-343-Diskless-4-bay-SATA-NAS-Enclosure-sasa-/190554311880?pt=US_Home_Network_Storage_NAS_&hash=item2c5dec0cc8
Although i can get it much cheaper.
Do they have full SSH access etc?
I know QNAP does, it comes with Busybox and you can install a package manager.
What specs? (As in RAM cpu etc)

Yes they do but they use a stripped down UNIX-like OS so whilst you do get full access, you can't do all that much.
They're usually cheaper if you get them with the disks already in.
That is because it comes with just BusyBox and no GNU Utils with embedded Linux, you can however add other stuff.
I got a QNAP 419P, been very reliable for the last 3 years. Runs all media in my house via Plex.
And yes, you can ssh into it.
What you guys think of this one

I use HP microservers. It is often sold with huge discounts; last year I bought one at 120 EUR + VAT. It is a standard server, you can install any OS you like.
Bet it's power hungry though..
According to my power meter, idle power is 31 Watts (at 230V). I have a single Seagate drive inside, at the moment. The server has a AMD netbook processor, but with ECC support.
N40L+unRAID FTW!
Completely wrong use of LMGTFY.
2x HP MicroServer N40L, each with 4x2TB
I have a multipurpose box which has also 2x1 tb drives attached.
In total uses less than 30 watt full load and without the drives less than 25 watt (It varies a lot in the 18-22 range so I put 25 to be sure).
I listen to radio on it and run 2 VMs as Tor nodes besides NAS for media storage.
x86 full debian. http://www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/Igel/4210/index.shtml
That is the basic stuff, I put it 1 gb ram and 16 GB flash card.
If you find one on ebay, tell me, I made good money reselling them as completely quiet home servers. torrent boxes or complex routers for home usage. Price was 30 Eur the basic version SH in here.

Synology gets my vote!
