I'm actually from New Zealand myself and I can agree datacenters around here are expensive. A cheaper alternative would be to look for a datacenter in Australia or Los Angeles, CA.
I looked at crazydomains.com.au but it is so far away.
Put it on a kangaroo. I really want to see a server that comes with a free Kangaroo. I heard Kangaroos are dicks.
Lol
Australia would be the closest alternative.
Are you after VPS, Dedicated or Co-location?
What do you need this for? If it's only for websites then I'm sure Los Angeles, CA would do just fine.
For game servers then the best option will be to co-locate direct in New Zealand.
What about Tokyo?
I wouldnt call this expensive :

Especially the line :
Free National Bandwidth (Unlimited Traffic/Data)

Free National Bandwidth (Unlimited Traffic/Data)
As long as he doesn't need International Bandwidth that could be a good option.

What is it your looking to do with this server?
just host web site, and a few music downloads
If it's only for a small website then I'm sure that a VPS in LA will go just fine.
I recommend you to find a company that you want to go with and they may have a test file that you can download to see what sort of speeds you can expect.
