Question about facebook/twitter

Lets suppose you are a facebook/twitter user living in a third world country. You are involved in activities which are legal pretty much everywhere in the world(including USA) but just not in the country you are resident of. It is not only illegal but also you will get capital punishment if you get caught.

The govt wants to track you down and arrest you and requests facebook and twitter to provide tracking information about your account. Will these companies cooperate with the government of a third world country in these circumstances?

  • I don't believe so. They act when things are illegal under the US law.

A country which is undeveloped and far away in Asia.

  • Don't be evil.

  • What is this illegal thing that is legal in the US and everywhere except where you are?

I wouldn't risk it personally, you never really know who is going to do what.

Many countries don't allow freedom of speech and blasphemy is a crime punishable by death.

I am not aware of any country allowing 100% freedom of speech. There is always something excluded from the right of freedom of speech.

It depends, but it's likely. They comply with plenty of requests from foreign law enforcement, so don't take the risk.

Use them over Tor or don't use them at all if you don't feel capable of the required OPSEC.

First off, maybe hard to believe from where you sit, man, but life can be fun and there are many things to do with it instead of risking capital punishment. Secondly, with this much at stake, no matter what anyone promises you, don`t trust any company to protect your privacy! And last but not least, if you must do this, hide behind a very good VPN, preferably self-administered one rather than a publicly offered service. This way at least, if something goes wrong and your head winds up on the cutting block, you can't blame anyone but yourself.

  • yes... We've had a guy arrested for managing a facebook page for a banned organisation and dozens for cyber bullying on facebook. All identifiable resources provided by facebook on request from law enforcement agencies. India by the way

yeah, the VPN thing will be much safer.

  • Yes, I think Twitter and Facebook will cooperate to law enforcers. Hmm it's hard to give advise if you should take a risk or not because we don't know your advocacy or goal. And your reasons why you are considering taking a risk. All the best!

  • No, Twitter will not cooperarte with foreign intelligence services (outside the US) - Twitter only follows US laws.

    Facebook probably would cooperate.

  • With recent incidents about privacy and NSA thing, I don't trust these sites.
