Changes to FTP backup @Prometeus

I got this email saying they have moved the backup server from leaseweb to their own for their 10GB free space for active vps customers and 25/50Gb for biz customers. You have two locations to choose now.. ( Dallas & Italy and a hint that one more is coming). The panel has changed from Virtualmin to Directadmin.

PS: this is free only for current clients, otherwise it costs EUR4/yr which is still decent. I am always happy to send new people to Prometeus, so I am leaving the order links intact.

Here is the copy of the email...

Hello!

We experienced a catastrophic (with data corruption) RAID failure in our LeaseWeb server and the level of service there was deemed unsatisfactory, therefore we decided to no longer renew.
instead we will use our own servers.
Since we need to offer backup space in another physical location than the one where you have service, we decided to offer 2 locations, Dallas and Milano.

As you probably know, every customer of ours has the opportunity to order for free 10 GB ftp of backup space. This is still true, the difference being that you can now choose the service location between Dallas and Milano. It is possible we will add another location later.
Some of you have custom packages, you will need to order any package in the desired location we will manually change it and add 3 months of free service for the inconvenience created by this failure.
Everyone will need to reorder because we cannot guess the location where you would like your service deployed. Please add any information you consider will be needed in the order notes.
For the free 10 GB as well as the 25/50 GB for Biz accounts, there is no need to specify anything, just order in the location you need it and apply the relevant coupon.

We are really sorry for this inconvenience.

Here are the links to the new 10 GB free (with any other paid hosting service) packages:
Dallas 10 GB: https://www.prometeus.net/billing/cart.php?a=add&pid=126&carttpl=cart
Milano 10 GB: https://www.prometeus.net/billing/cart.php?a=add&pid=130&carttpl=cart
The coupon codes are the same.
The package features are largely the same, with the notable exception that all come now with SFTP access by default.

Correction: the Virtualmin one is for the iperweb customers and is there to stay. It was already in our DC in Milano, only the server in Germany which had already DirectAdmin has failed and is being replaced. We decided to use our own locations, since we now have more, and give people the opportunity to choose. So, if you have service in Dallas, you may wish to choose Dallas still because of proximity, or Milano, to make sure that, if something happens to Dallas, you can still get your data from Milano.
We try to offer a choice as wide as possible.

    Admission of guilt, rather :(
The drives in Leaseweb were falling like flies, one every few weeks lately, we kept hoping they will finally replace the controller or faulty psu, whatever was killing the drives, but no, they kept replacing disks (insane, given they replaced maybe more than 12 a year) and we should have abandoned hope and move before it failed completely.

What a reason in few words why discs going damaged?

    To much operations?

What can you suggest to make disc fails to minimum?

No, not really, this was a backup server, with traffic a bit in excess of 5 TB a month it means it was mostly idle, diskswise, it probably wrote more than 5 TB, but it had an array of 24 disks, the writes are spread, so if anything, it was NOT under stress regarding storage.
It was either a faulty controller or a faulty PSU, those are the only things connected to the disks and, given the insanely high failure rate, it was not the fault of the drives.
