HELP please - Server is not bootable

Hellow dear LET members,

my dedi stopped booting here are few commands before reboot:

[root@serv ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Disk /dev/sda doesn't contain a valid partition table

[root@serv ~]# fdisk /dev/sda
Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel
Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only,
until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous
content won't be recoverable.

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 243201.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Warning: invalid flag 0x0000 of partition table 4 will be corrected by w(rite)

Then after reboot i see via IPMI (Dell Remote Management Controller) these messages:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device

No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received

Media test failure, check cable

Exitting intel boot agent

Please kindly advice me what steps to do to make it boot?
Thank You

Were you editing anything on the disk before you rebooted into this state?

I looks like there is no boot loader or partition on your disk.

If you send me a PM, I can look on your IPMI for you.

  • i just sent You a message, hope you can help me.

Someone said about this issue this: "Your initial replies showed that the partition table was missing"

  • Either your disks took a dump or you removed your bootloader at a guess.

You should be able to mount a virtual media of sorts with a live distro and see what is wrong.

  • I've run a rescuecd on it and have managed to recover one partition on /dev/sda, but when booting the rescue for CentOS, it's not finding the system.

I'm going to run a deeper scan on the disk to see it it can find any more partitions, maybe a /boot.

  • Mikeg was unable to make HDD bootable or restore any data, Thank You Mikeg for your effort and help.

I want to ask if anyone can advice me on what to do now? i have IPMI access
    Thank You

If you can't recover your partitions you might be better off reinstalling the OS from scratch and restoring from backups to reduce the downtime.

  • I'd test the hard drives thoroughly before restoring your backups.
