what is spam?

in General

if u write an email to different ppl with an offer but make it special for each one is it spam? not send to hundred ppl but maybe 20-50 and make it custom for each one and sen done by one and not all atonce?

    If they didn't ask for it, especially if it is for a marketing purpose, it is spam.

    Wikipedia has a great definition:

    CAN-SPAM, a direct response of the growing number of complaints over spam e-mails,[6] defines a "commercial electronic mail message" as "any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service (including content on an Internet website operated for a commercial purpose)."

    Generally I agree with this definiton; however what if it's not canned mass message, but personally written?

    As example domainers use that approach (personal mail from me to you) when they assume that someone specifically may be interested in domain they sell.

    @Silvenga the quote you posted clearly says that is the definition of "commercial electronic mail message", which the U.S. government is able to regulate to a greater extent (i.e. less free speech protection) than other mail; not CAN-SPAM's definition of spam.

    Anyway, definition various from country to country, and also from ISP to ISP or organization to organization (e.g. spam blocklists of course generally have a very broad definition).

    Some examples of Spam, things I've never signed up for.

    Also had some emails from a provider here on LET, I never signed up for, ever but they emailed me regardless without consent. Which is what spam really is.

    Basically if the user didn't ask for the email it can be considered spam especially if you're trying to sell them something. The only way is to start an mailing list with a link to unsubscribe if they want, still can be considered spam but atleast you'll be covered as they originally signed up. I know a lot of providers make you email another address to get unsubscribed which I think is lack of effort on their end to be in compliance properly.. Just my opinion :)

    Yes. It is spam. I do not want it. I cannot make it more plain or clear than that.

    Yeah, reply to unsubscribe he says. The last time I did that the amount of spam I received went up drastically, it's like confirming "yes, this e-mail address is active, send more spam here". I similarly don't click on any unsubscribe link for the same reason above; unless I know the website, like mailchimp, or from a legit company which I no longer have interest in their products.

    I believe number of email recipients don't exempt your email from being a spam, no matter how big or small your recipients are, so long as you have their permission like they signed up to receive your emails, it won't be a spam. But still sometimes, your email may end up in the spam folder if the recipient has not added you to his/her address book. Hope this helps :)
