PPTP - Can I limit b/w per user?
Hey guys,
Got a VPS setup to run a VPN for a few friends. Just wondering if I can limit the amount of bandwidth per user, as to ensure that I don't go over my monthly limit?
Not going to be switching to OpenVPN or anything like that.. need a PPTP solution, as setting up OpenVPN on 4 windows PC's, a Macbook, a couple of iPhone's and an iPad and a few Android phones really would be a nightmare.
Any PPTP solutions for limiting bandwidth per user?
Cheers

OpenVPN is a nightmare on any mobile device anyway not running Linux/Windows/OsX... at least that's what I've experienced so far (Android)
@Freek I've had similar experiences. OpenVPN is great with all of the configurations, but a nightmare for clients.
Android has a OpenVPN client (requires rooting).
iOS has an OpenVPN client (require's rooting & buying it)
@MrLadoodle I know but it also requires a special tun.ko file.. And when you finally found one that's compatible with your rom/bootloader/device, you'll find out that it disconnects almost every time your phone connects to a new cell tower. meh.
@MrLadoodle .. the people who are using this VPN are hardly "technically-minded".. at least I don't think my 70 year old grandmother is?
@liamwithers Sorry for going offtopic, but what does your 70 year old grandmother need a VPN for? Netflix
?
@Freek Netflix indeed :P
@Freek Old granny porn of course.
@MrLadoodle it's ok, she doesn't need VPN for uploading.
I was looking at GuizmoVPN and it seems that it supports password authentication only, is there an iOS client that supports client certificates?
@Ipn I think you can pass keys to GuizmoVPN, I used it in my iPad and it used keys.
PPTP on iOS is so easy to setup, I love it. I know you can limit bandwidth because I use a service that does. Look up VPN Express in the app store.
@jarland thanks for that.. need something compatible over all devices though, preferably set up server side. Shall look into it though for the iOS devices using my VPN
the best way to limit/monitor bandwidth is forcing the traffic through a proxy server.

@PAD I'll have a look at this tomorrow.. I assume it'll explain how I can limit bw?
It's a buuuuunch of documentation on traffic shaping.
Best documentation you can read, may be dated but everything still works the same. Hell you can do this via IPTABLES but that gets a bit messy, I highly recommend you read what I sent you and then search Google if you still need ideas on how to implement it.
@liamwithers It is that, and works on all platforms, but that is still someone else doing it. Good example of what you want though.
