Processor Opinion

I was offered a good deal on a Duel Intel Xeon E5645 and was considering using it for a node. It is not a newer generation processor but the duel config scores a 13930 at cpubenchmark.

What are you opinions on the processors?

  • E5645's are excellent node CPUs, we're using a couple of them in each of our newer DL380 builds in Frankfurt and Bucharest. They're champs.

Yeah, from end-user point of view, I have some of my best VPSes on those. Tho, not the CPU is the bottleneck, be sure to have fast storage along, otherwise it will be laggy no matter the cpu and bw, sometimes even RAM. If you dont have fast storage dont give any type of swap. It is worth it to have high RAM in the machine than give out swap and kill the io which in turn takes down the node. Or use ssds for swap.
