Best VPN server/client software for personal use?

What's the best VPN software to use with a linux server and linux/windows/android clients? I mainly use VPN to access blocked sites in the UK, bypass BT's crappy traffic filtering and connect to my home PC when out and about. I like OpenVPN AS and it's web GUI, but it has no support for IPv6 (I asked them in ticket) and is limited to 2 users without paying like $100 a year.

PPTP client on windows puts all my traffic through VPN, so I can't ping my home server on 192.168.2.100 on a different network card. SoftEther is also nice but the "vpncmd" utility fails to work on my server.

Comments

    1. OpenVPN does work with ipv6.
    2. you can disable route all traffic throught pptp.
    3. change NAT network on VPN side.
    4. SoftEther has windows gui configuration app.
I love accel-pptp, has native support of ipv6 and dhcpv6. Take a look.
  • SoftEther - you can connect via L2TP, OpenVPN and the SoftEther client.

  • OpenVPN AS from version 2 does fully support IPv6.

Only the community version of OpenVPN works with v6, and that version seems to get confused when I connect more than one client....

I'll have a look at accel-pptp and pptp again though, thanks.

Setting it up and setting the initial admin password fails though!

    pptpd is a garbage, btw.

    1. OpenVPN https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/IPv6
      Dont know about any limits.

    2. Also OpenVPN can work with such scheme - bridge with virtual tap interface + radvd + dhcpv6 for windows clients get ipv6 dns servers.

  • Is that KVM or OpenVZ?

  • Tinc VPN is so easy to set up and is lighter than OpenVPN. You could take a look at them (http://www.tinc-vpn.org/). If you're rooted they have a Android client (because everyone hates using the restrictive OpenVPN provider). Most Linux repositories contain Tinc, and there is a Windows client.

Does anyone have links to an openvpn tutorial for Debian 7 that they have used with success? I remember last time setting it up was a nightmare!

EDIT: Nvm, using https://github.com/cwaffles/ezopenvpn and will see how it goes!

Debian Handbook has an easy-to-follow section. I use Easy-RSA v3 separately for certs and keys though.

I used the one here (with some tweaks):

    OpenVPN ftw imho.

You do understand, that you can have a custom routing?

SoftEther is the best! it also supports ICMP/DNS tunneling, besides being an open source project! You can even remotely control the VPN settings through your Windows PC if you don't want to use Linux

If you haven't changed the default port, it might be that port 443 (the default port for SoftEther) is being used by another process (perhaps httpd?). Try to stop the process and tryi again, or change the port from the configuration file. But make sure you stop the SoftEther VPN service first, change the configuration file and start it again

I like openVPN, easy to install on server, and all you need is to download and install their client app to connect to it.

I use pptpd for PPTP, and openswan, xl2tpd for L2TP.

  • Another vote fof SoftEther (although I've not been able to configure it to support IPv6).

I personally used L2TP or Squid with implemented htaccess authentication to stop the nasties.

The moment you didn't realise this is 2014. Dang it.
