Are you seriously asking that question?

    DD tests obviously!

In contact with vultr, Im trying to see if i can give some of my winnings as a giveaway here on lowendtalk, i think they have to ask the CEO so I have to wait.

It's a nice gesture, but you should keep it all. I'm sure they put a lot of thought into how to run the contest, so if you change that you screw with the risk they calculated, which might make them think twice about running a contest in the future.

Think of it like a store giving away a gift card. They might give away a $300 gift card because they think "They'll only use $100 of that $300 before they forget about it, or run out of things to buy, or whatever". Of course they're OK with the whole $300 being spent, or they wouldn't have made the prize that high, but they're betting that it won't be.

Now if you break that gift card up into $30 gift cards and give to 10 people, it's much more likely the whole balance will get used, which of course they weren't betting on and so they might think twice about having a giveaway in the future.

(Sure, it also might attract clients that the company wouldn't have otherwise had, but this is LET after all, so how many will stick around after the free period is over :-)

Anyway, sorry for the long post, and congrats!

    @Ree

I did not think of it that way, but I did contact vultr and they said they can't take away my balance and make gift codes to giveaway - which I understand and I am fine with.

I won and i am truly happy.

Thanks everyone again for the congrats - and THANKS VULTR <--- I love you guys!

Agreed. They may expect you spending the $300 for a long time, say $15 per month and lasting 20 months. It will be a larger impact if 10 people use it up in the first 2 months.

    And, yea, congrats!

  • Awesome! I missed out on this, but then again, I got plenty of credit there :-)

Anyway, Vultr is awesome. Support is fast too!

If you're really feeling generous, you could always deploy a VPS or two for open source projects or Linux distro mirrors or something.

  • Congrats Stevie. Nice to see the winner in-house :)

Anyone else noticed how vultr charge the same for 768mb as they do the 1024mb? According to my bill at least

    Wait, what? O.o

Yeah, someone else said that it seems to be rounding up at fault.

Congrats btw :) That i spend with all my LEBs in 2 years or more :P

If you order the $0.007 per hour 768mb instance, you get billed at $0.01 since it rounds up. So there's no point in ordering a 768mb since you get charged the same as a 1024mb instance. At least that's how it comes up on my bill :/

    That's ridiculous! I have a 768mb AND 1024mb instance. I want the (stolen) money back >.<

Yeah, have a look at the billing and click on your charges to see if it's the same for you

  • Congrats!

That is only if you keep it for under an hour. 1 cent is minimum charge. Your post is still relevant to those people only spawning instances for short periods though.

Do they discount it later on then? I've had a few instances running for several hours at 768mb and they are still charging me 0.01 per hour as far as I can see :S

My bill shows I was charged $0.03 for a 4 hour 768MB instance, which is correct. They'll charge at $0.007 and round up to the nearest cent.

Indeed. My 768 MB instance costs, caused by rounding, exactly the same as the 1024 MB instance ($0.01/hour). That sucks...

However! Congrats to the OP! :-)

Ah no looks like they do adjust it later. If you divide $3 by the 428 hours you've had then that is $0.007. So my mistake
