Cheapest server with 2TB + storage

C0mpassC0mpass Member

Hello,

I'm looking for something to replace my SYS backup server which is a bit to expensive for me.

Do any of you know cheap solutions for storage? VPS / Dedicated doesnt matter.

Thanks.

My suggestion was going to be sys. I don't know of anyone that is cheaper than that for that amount of storage.

We have 2TB for $28/month at vpsdime.

  • Kimsufi I guess

  • AWS Glacier, $0.01/GB/Month if you don't mind waiting for a few hours before able to retrieve them. I keep 400GB on a KS-1 and push older stuff to Glacier. You are looking at $27/month for 2.5TB of data. And the best thing is you don't have to pay for the full 2TB is you are not using it.

Go with a VPSDime storage plan, probably the best pricing out there for 2TB.

I also recommend Tarsnap for incremental site backups and such. If you want some secure backup for your site files/DBs/etc then try them out.

I can offer an Atom dedicated with a 3TB HDD for $30/month. No RAID though, it's a single HDD.

Guys get realistic with your "$28/month", the SYS-IP-1 server is only about $41, and not just provides 2x2TB disks, it's also so much more than just plain storage. I would be highly surprised if anyone honestly switches from that dedi to such storage "deal".

@C0mpass If you already paid the setup fee on SYS, do you really "save" much by basically throwing it away? Maybe instead cancel some or most of your other VPSes/dedis and move more stuff onto the SYS, to justify its monthly cost.

As for really cheap storage options, you could check out OVH's Hubic (with HubicFuse to mount it as FS)
    http://lowendtalk.com/discussion/23140/10-tb-storage-for-10-eur-mo-from-hubic-ovh/p1
However while the speed is specified as "up to 10 Mbit", in reality people see anywhere from 1 to 5-6 Mbit at most. There's a free tier so you can check out how it works for you before buying.

  • @rm_, I'm honestly wondering why you are still on a VPS forum when all you do is spamming OVH's offers on every thread you reply to.

OP is looking for an alternative for his OVH server and you are talking down to offers people submit here and spamming about OVH again.

If everything can be solved by OVH, why does this industry still exist?

If OVH satisfies you in every aspect, that's great. However, people's expectations may be different than yours. People may actually want more than 2 cheap desktop drives with no raid on a so-so network (I use a kimsufi for VPN when I need to and getting my connection lost every few hours) with absolutely no support from a giant company who doesn't even know you exist or care.

Please, have at least some respect to the providers here who are working hard on a razor thin margins to compete with giants.

LET has always been a client's place, and not a provider's place, that's one of the awesome things about it, compared to WHT and its clones. That means a fellow client will always receive the best advice possible, nonwithstanding "hurt feelings" of any hard-working providers eager to peddle a mediocre deal.

I agree that LET crowd should always look for the best deal for themselves. Best deal doesn't mean the cheapest deal. If it was, Ramnode wouldn't be the top provider for the last 3 polls. There are lots of alternatives. As I said, your OVH deals are not the best deals around for every use case.

In your perfect little world, everyone would go for OVH's services and kill the competition. Then what are you going to do when OVH raises prices since there is no competition? (Do you even realize how many times they changed their prices in the last year?)

Providers on LET/LEB changed the WHT's VPS industry by offering more bang for your buck which opened the way for providers like your beloved Digital Ocean.

I'm not sure how someone coming from a ex-socialist/communist country be this capitalist and far from the truth.

I'm not a provider and I'm a big fan of OVH. But my problem with your OVH posts is that you seem to be making recommendations based on on what you think people should want rather than what they're actually asking for.

Case in point: the OP said the SYS server is "a bit" too expensive. SYS-IP-1 is $42/month. $28 is 35% less than that. That's more than "a bit" of difference.

Sorry I don't know what to say, I am just re-reading this part and it makes me smile. :)

  • This is even why stuff like poison milk exists in China etc. Same idea. It's not just the $ figure or the most apparent features.

Why are you reviving a 3 year old thread as your first post here?
