What host would you recommend for File Hosting?

I want to run a small webserver that will be used to host large files. I've tried looking around but what I've seen either:

1) Costs too much for what I'm getting
2) Doesn't have enough disk space or
3) Offers higher specs than I require, making it a waste of money for what I'm using it for.

I'm looking for at least 40-50GB of disk space with fairly decent bandwidth. Specs aren't really important since it'll just host LAMP and FTP. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. (Preferably hosted in US) - Thanks!

How much are you looking to spend?

RamNode's lowest CVZ plan should do the job. Not sure what the current voucher is, but you should be able to pick it for under $18 a year.

Edit: the coupon TWOYEAR should bring the plan down to $13.92 a year, New York, Seattle and Atlanta. I've not tried New York myself, but I can vouch for the excellence of Seattle and Atlanta, I've had plans in each location for at least a year.

Up to $3-$5/mo is optimal (not like we want to spend money) but I'd go up to 7-10.

This looks fairly promising. I'll be sure to look into that, and I've heard a bunch of great things from RamNode - totally forgot about them though! :)

  • i could prob accommodate you. do you mind if i ask what sort of files your looking to host? im just in the process of migrating my current clients to a dedicated server.

i can offer you full unmanaged email, dns, ftp, web and database hosting with unlimited bandwidth using my chosen control panel.

all sites come with ipv6 addresses i have a /48 allocation XD

    test your ping at srv1.mdhosting.co.uk

  • If you get the 128MB plan, use lighttpd or nginx instead of Apache

The pages I use require php as well so I'm not sure if I could use lighttpd with php.

The files I'm hosting are most music albums from an Internet Radio Station I run. They're "fan made" so copyright is not an issue. It's just there to allow others to download it incase they want a hard copy.

Where is the problem? You have many tutorials on howtoforge how to install lighttpd with php. I'm currently running lighttpd with php-fpm on ubuntu 14.04 without any problems.

ahh ok then thats cool wouldn't want to annoy a datacentre i've just moved into lol! forgot to mention i've got 1gbps connection with a guaranteed 150mbs at all times so at the moment with the small clients i've got you could stream pretty decent quality

if you fancy it pm me and we can talk logistics

  • You can. It's extremely easy.

    apt-get update && apt-get install -y lighttpd php5-fastcgi && lighty-enable-mod fastcgi-php && /etc/init.d/lighttpd restart

Thank you. I'm still fairly new to setting up a Linux VPS - kind of trying to teach myself and learn a bit - so I really appreciate the help. I'm sure I can find a guide online if I need to. I'm assuming that could easily run on a 128MB RAM server, or would you recommend bumping it up to 256. I'm trying to look up recommendations but it's all pretty vague.

RamNode seems to look promising (Using DigitalOcean right now for testing stuff). Any other VPS company I've found with good prices either seemed kind of sketchy or couldn't offer the lower-end spec w/ additional Disk Space/Bandwidth.

If anyone has any company specifically please feel free to PM it to me and I will check them out. Thanks.

I've never used Ramnode, but I've heard good things about them. lighttpd + PHP + MySQL will run fine on 128MB RAM, and that plan comes with 128MB burst memory too

Thank you for the information and help. I really appreciate it! I'll look around and If I can't find anything better I'll just go with RamNode probably.

Hey to be honest i think you can easily do it via webhost , Cheaper and pretty much does the same thing.

That's what I thought about doing, but when I looked up a lot of the major webhosts for reviews, many people weren't too happy. From what it seemed like, a lot of people just recommended to get a cheap VPS and set it up yourself if you know how. I may look into that again though.

Yeah i do, but it really depends i set up a filehosting script which i bought from themeforest and worked fine no lagg or any sort of strain

XenPower, if they have available VMs. @Maounique

$3 gets you a 512MB VPS with 60GB of HDD at @mitgib's Hostigation sister company HighSpeedWeb:

    https://billing.highspeedweb.net/cart.php?gid=19

Or on the upper side of your price range at €5.9 (about $8) but with twice the RAM, twice the disk space, and over twice the bandwidth on what I think is the best US network anyone on LET uses is @prometeus' Dallas XenPower (click the USA tab, can't link directly):

    http://xenpower.com/

Personally I'd spend the extra and go with Prometeus, but Hostigation/HSW is pretty good too.

  • Thank you everyone for all the recommendations and insight. I'll be looking around a bit more before I make a decision, but you all definitely made this a lot easier for me. Thanks a lot.

  • 50G is rather a small number here. I was thinking about something like 200G or so.

Anyway if you go really beyond, you will have the choice to go to kimsufi or online.net. With $15 you'll get 500G or 1TB storage and unmetered bandwidth.
