Looking for dedicated server

TehEnforceTehEnforce Member

I need a dedicated server that has a good enough CPU for running FFMPEG at a reasonable speed for converting video files to .mp4 The server also needs to have enough RAM and CPU to run a LNMP stack and Exim4 + Dovecot. Site will be low traffic.

Must accept PayPal

Budget: $40< per month

  • I think Delimiters Duel X5150 promo is still going on, its $20 per month. I don't know how well the processors do with converting files though, never tried it before. Maybe @MarkTurner can tell us how well they will do.

  • @CFarence - I have never tried it but it maybe interesting to work out a set of benchmarks that people want to see and time permitting we'll run the benchmarks across each server type.

Delimiters promo looks like a real good offer. Im now real curious to how well they do aswell.

Benchmarks seems like a really good idea :)

Dual X5150 Delimiters UnixBench is 1700pts

    i5-3570s Kimsufi KS-4 UnixBench is 6900pts

  • Why not try a vps ?

  • @FredQC that sounds like you have dynamic power mode enabled, you should retry in high power mode and disable cpu scaling.

Nice. Kimsufi's result looks damn sexy! However curious how the Dual X5150 will perform witrh the mode MarkTurner suggested.

Video converting takes up ALOT of CPU. If I go ahead and use a VPS I will be like instantly terminated or either the neighbours will go insane and rip off the support team's skin.

    @FlipHost and @concerto49
Could you guys put out a offer for me? :)

@TehEnforce - what is your budget for this?

Don't have anything less than $40/month.

  • @Serverian proves I can't read then doesn't it :)

@TehEnforce - for $40 you have these options:

    Dual L5420, 16GB, 1TB disk - http://www.delimitervps.com/landingpage/blades/?p=L5420161000&l=Atlanta

    or

    Dual X5150, 16GB 500GB disk - http://www.delimitervps.com/landingpage/blades/?p=X515016500&l=Atlanta

Not if you have dedicated CPU on the vps :) Of course if you choose a low budget vps you will be terminated due tot the shared cpu, but if it's something with 1-2-3 dedicated cpu's you could use 100% all the time without affecting anybody else.

    From hetzner robot:

    Intel Core i7-2600 8307 16 GB 2 x 3 TB 41.00 € 53h 22m

after removing VAT, 34.45, convert EUR to USD, $46.84 for 8307 passmark benchmark, 16 gb of ram, and 6 tb of space. it is much better than trash l5420's,

if you want to strictly stay within that budget, i don't see any right now, but the i7-950's will drop to 35 euro, which would be right at $40 after removing vat and convering. it is about 1.75x faster than dual l5420. x5150 is also horrible. and remember that this video encoding won't be 100% efficienct with all these extra threads, it is generally better to have less, better threads

    or get the next i7 2600 when it's at $35 on seflow.it

Oh, you can also wait for the next online.net throwoff e3-1230v1 to become available on oneprovider,

    http://oneprovider.com/dedicated-servers/paris-france

I used to have about 20 of those. They will be about 40% faster than the dual L5420 and when I had them a few months ago, it was $39.50 a month. Not sure how much exchange rate has changed.
