China mainland

How hard is to get a VPS/Server in China? Not Hong Kong.

Can a provider take responsibility for his clients or every client needs an ICP permit?

  • Well, I have not seen any deals on LET/LEB for inland China. I assume there isn't very many at all.

As for getting the actual VPSes or servers, not hard at all, there are many hosts, some are even close to or within the LEB range.

  • @jimaek - if you are running a server in China then you'll need an ICP license. You can't get away with using your hosting providers ICP license any longer, you are expected to be licensed directly. MIIT handle the licensing - http://www.miibeian.gov.cn/

@MarkTurner I am interested in a CDN pop over there. But have no idea how would that work. Since its not really a website. Its only static files and nothing else.

I guess my provider will need to get me an ICP license since foreigners cant register one for themselves.

  • Currently a government campaign of exterminating websites unappreciated by them (for either free speech or porn reasons) is going on. It isn't the best time to make a try on ICP license.

  • @jimaek - find a competent one because if you are storing third party files then you are criminally liable for the content

80 port will be blocked if your domain don't have an ICP license. An ICP license is based on one domain, which means that your licensed domain can be accessed via 80 port while unlicensed cannot be accessed (no matter it is a website or not).

I can help foreigner get the ICP license, however, I don't recommend hosting in mainland China. If you are interested, contact me:)

  • I once read aliyun, the cloud service from alibaba group will help you to setup the service and get ICP.

I think qiniu.com or youpai.com is for you.

Qiniu and Youpai are CDNs for static contents, not for hosting.

However, if you are hosting your JS files... I believe Baidu, Aliyun already have their own JS CDN, but you are more than welcomed and thanked to put on a new one.

Despite of history of losing data(how dare you call yourself "cloud"(yun,云)?), bad network sometimes, and high-price compared to other service providers, Aliyun is one of the best VPS provider and have strong background of Alibaba.

    Just remember that:

    1. Without ICP license, your 80 and 8080 port will be blocked. They use a whitelist, but you can always ask the provider to assist you-- Chinese people are mostly friendly to "foreign friends".
    2. Traffic and bandwidth of Chinese server are around 20 times more expensive than those in the US.
    3. There are several different network in China: China Telcom(电信), China Unicom(联通), China Mobile(移动), CERNET(教育网), plus China Tietong(铁通), Changkuan(长宽) and some smaller providers. The intertransit between DAMNED F**KING SUCKS, which makes the largest difference between Internet in EU and the US. So make sure you are using one with BGP, or at least multi-line, at least with both Telcom and Unicom, or you are blocking half of your Chinese users.
