Setting up Ubuntu/Debian NoMachine

compilecompile Member

I am not fluent in Linux command line (I know some basic commands), and I'm having a hard time installing a gui and Nomachine/VNC.

Is there any automated script or guide to install the latest version?

I have tried to install gnome, xkde, lxde and tried running them but I don't get anything showing in VNC or Nomachine.

Please help :(

This guide did always work fine for me http://justpaste.it/ftzd

I see they changed quite a bit in version 4 so I'm not sure how that works, but in version 3 it used to be simple: install 3 packages from their site to server (now it's just one package so could be simpler).

    Install lxde (apt-get install lxde)

    Install nx client.

In your nx session config, under desktop, choose Unix, Custom, click the settings button, choose the "run the following command" radio button and put in lxsession (or /usr/bin/lxsession).

Configure everything else what's needed in the client (I think it's self explanatory)

    Connect and there you are.

  • Version 3 of NX was just awesome, but with v4 they're going to go closed source!

Another thing you can try is X2Go :

  • I'm actually looking for a VPS provider that has Phabricator available.

    Does anyone know of one?

  • Just install freenx and freenx-server on the machine....

Then you can use the NoMachine (nx) client on your computer still fine.

I cannot help you with v4 as they've changed a LOT and made it needlessly complicated, however you can find information on the NX site.

    For version 3.5:

VNC is definitely easiest, but nomachine or x2go is definitely the better experience.

  • FWIW, I have been using 3.5 for ages... tried 4 but I did not like it at all.
