[Yahoo!] The latest company ignoring Web users’ requests for privacy

wychwych Member

Yahoo yesterday announced that it will stop complying with Do Not Track signals that Web browsers send on behalf of users who wish to not be monitored for advertising purposes.

Yahoo also refused to honor Do Not Track signals from Internet Explorer 10 in late 2012 because Microsoft decided to turn it on by default instead of asking users to make the choice.

Do not track is not a legal mandate and therefore they can do whatever they want. At least they're warning you first.

Yep, they need to outline stricter guidelines for it to work well.

Glad Yahoo! has told people about their choice though.

@wych wasnt referring to any legal implications though. Fact remains they will ignore an explicit request not to track.

Not that Microsoft or Google, or realistically anyone is currently following the standards.

Cannot comment on Microsoft but neither Google nor Facebook obey the header, http://www.forbes.com/sites/eliseackerman/2013/02/27/big-internet-companies-struggle-over-proper-response-to-consumers-do-not-track-requests/

However just because they dont does not mean Yahoo shouldnt either.

Honestly, you guys are acting as if this just started happening. It's the same thing with the NSA scandals. We've all suspected and joked about it, all Snowden did was confirm it for us. People flipped tables when they found out Verizon Wireless was cooperating with the NSA, but they don't realize that AT&T and T-Mobile and all the other providers are doing the same thing, it just happened to be that Verizon was blown out of cover first.

Either way, you shouldn't have anything to worry about or be paranoid over, unless you have something you don't want others to know about. As for me, I just wish they'd like my Facebook statuses, seeing as how they monitor them.

Not quite sure how this relates to the NSA stuff, but OK!

A unstandardised browser system that most websites ignore (basically says please dont record me as a visitior) vs NSA snooping.

Yahoo needs to act more like this in order to compete with Google and the mountains of information they hold on people. It's a race to the bottom.

privacy is a joke once you get online

    Pretty much.

  • People still think they should expect privacy on the Internet?

Use Tor and hope you aren't interesting enough for the NSA/FBI/etc to care about your shopping habits? :P

  • If anyone didn't wanted to be tracked they can easily turn off cookies. Very simple and every browser supports it. I don't understand why people complain. Forget about DNT, we've been able to stop tracking since the modern Internet.

Ugh, there will be a next thing that allows tracking. You will always be tracked.

This. Serve for your own if you need/want it - Use a VPN (if you have a dynamic IP thats not even really required), block known JS, use a randomized browser string.
