Looking for a VPS (for VPN usage) Ideally located in Edinburgh, looking for ping <1MS to 3MS to this IP: 217.47.157.142

If you can't get any closer, openITC is in Newcastle.

yeah, I noticed that with BT a while back. Seems apparent from ip location tools that routing in the UK is like a black box. Looks like AlexanderM couldn't have any less hops to 8.8.8.8 mind you.

Newcastle Is about 100MS, where as with DotVPS I get 40MS

That's just a sample IP. When I use DotVPS in UK I get better pings/cleaner routes without their VPN, but trying to get something within 20MS and not 40MS

Apparently these chaps have data centres around about Edinburgh but a quick search doesn't reveal anyone being hosted out of there. http://www.pulsant.com/cloud-computing/10-uk-data-centres/

I can't recall any provider on here offering services in Caledonia.

You'll probably find that most (if not all) traffic is sent via London. Although it seems a little backwards, it might be a good idea to try out data centres close to LINX.

Ja, that's probably a good idea. It seems 15-18ms is what you are looking at from London to that IP.

This is the issue up here, most of the DC's are geared towards corporate clients rather than hosting related.

I think BT may well still send it all the way down to London unfortunately. I know you can avoid London with Virgin Media via Edge-IX (Manchester) as I get to our stuff in Newcastle in about 20 seconds at best (average is currently 23ms) which is a few ms better than I get to our kit at RapidSwitch.

Not sure why you're 100ms to our stuff in Newcastle, I'm 31ms via FTTC going via London and back from Newcastle.
