DDOS Protected hosting seems to be becoming standard or am i wrong?

It seems many hosting company's are selling vps servers as ddos protected so will all the other providers follow suite?
Why are only some hosts doing ddos protected hosting and others are not? As it is obvious that people will go with the ddos protected vps / hosting over a non ddos protected package - plan.

What are your thoughts on this?

DDOS protected or non ddos protected?

  • off topic - but this is not a "Industry News"

  • Well i think it is industry news as a lot of vps sellers are starting to offer ddos protected vps plans, where should i move this thread too if not in this category?

It always depends on what they define as protection.

Countless hosts call it protection if they simply suspend you in order to "protect" the other customers. I wouldnt exactly call this "protection" though.

I would think ddos protection means the host is using extremely high bandwidth to counter and take most attacks without disrupting services. Also i would like to point out if you get ddos'd a few times 9 out 10 your ( non ddos offering host ) will suspend you and refund you in most cases, which is not fair really though it is understandable.

OVH including free DDoS protection with their services made it very attractive for alot of resellers to advertise ddos protected services, most of those resellers have no clue about the protection and they cannot guarantee anything because it is being offered for free by OVH on a shared basis. this probably is the cause of the increased offering/demand for it.

Personally I think that having DDoS protection included with your servers is a must these days

there is always a chance that you will become randomly a victim.

  • Yes i think it should be standard and a must have for anyone selling hosting, as ddos problems are hitting every host worldwide on a weekly basis monthly if there lucky, there should be a new rule stating all hosts must provide ddos protection or be using a minimum amount of bandwidth per server etc

Sorry, had to remove the poll otherwise I couldn't move it. Feel free to recreate it.

  • Oh ok will make again : )

  • I think a time is going to come in a few years when every host would be offering DDOS protection as it would become a standard feature & those who won't would be dead pooled.I know a plenty of people who moved their servers from Leaseweb & Hetzner to OVH only because of the DDOS protection.

OVH is not offering for free they are charging 1(KS, SYS ranger) to 5(OVH ranges) Euros extra per dedicated server. It is shared but it is worth it.And there is plenty of data available on how OVH's DDOS protection works but if some provider is lazy enough to not read it then it's their own fault rather than that of OVH.

  • Yes i strongly agree and it is happening right now to be honest and as you just pointed out so all hosts should seriously take notice and update to ddos protected or lose out, all they have to do is just buy lots of bandwidth and better speeds, well saying it is easy i am sure it aint cheap lol

  • sz1hosting said: all they have to do is just buy lots of bandwidth

All they can be exactly the tricky part ;)

  • Yes i do not think it is gonna be cheap for any host but any host with 1000's of customers this would not be to difficult to implement.

  • True, if you have more customers you can certainly afford bigger lines, but at the same time you will still need bigger lines in order to support these customers.

Such attacks are always nasty, even providers who only specialise in this field sometimes struggle. A lot depends of course on their network topology and their customers' setups.

  • ( Mandatory ) i think will soon be the normal for ddos protection for any company selling hosting. Though ddos protected does not mean ddos protected hosts will not affect a server or host it can still take a server offline when a big attack is done.

I think it will slowly become mandatory, I remember time when scanning host for open port or vulrn is rare, but nowdays its just part of daily logs.

ddos slowly going into the same direction,

I hope you support increased prices then.

  • Yes, over the space of around six months, it has become somewhat mandatory in the industry now.

    Rare? Hardly a "new" thing.

  • Nice to see all the Hosts out of OVH calling DDOS protection mandatory ;)

For certain situations it is of course desirable. I can see DDOS protection being moved further and further upstream as it becomes a necessity.

I reckon DDoS protection should become standard, the amount of script kiddies on the internet just there to annoy...

  • For me it's depends on what you're going to do with the server.

Some services just doesn't require DDOS protected.

  • There is always cloudflare ^_^

@johnlth93 Yeah, but the amount of DDoS on VPS nodes due to others would make it worthwhile.
