Hover.com

georgegeorge Member

Hi,

I'm somewhat new to this, but I'd like to get myself a new domain and I was wondering if it's really important on which registar I decide to go with?

Just recently I find out about Hover (https://www.hover.com/) and so far I've been only reading good reviews about their services, but I'd really like to hear some opinions.

I'm aware of the big players (Namecheap, Name.com and so on..), but I thought it might not be a bad idea to ask you guys directly. Thanks.

Regards,
George.

  • I recommend that you do not buy domains from resellers

you better buy domains directly from the roots.

One good domain provider I can recommend is http://internetbs.net

  • I've been slowly migrating all of mine to NameSilo.com, really happy with them.

Thanks. I was actually looking into internetbs, but then I've come across some topic @vpsboard saying that their DNS servers are not as good.

Edit: here is the link: https://vpsboard.com/topic/271-domain-registrars-and-dns-server-hosters/#entry4253

  • hover is a brand of Tucows, a very reputable company, ICANN accredited registrar. I don't think you'd go wrong with them. http://www.tucows.com/

    Sounds good :)

  • You do not need to use the registars default nameservers. Use custom nameservers in your domain registar and input the nameservers from a service like www.rage4.com or www.zonomi.com in there, then afterwards you manage all DNS records using those third-party dns providers.

It also opens more possibilities for you because services like rage4 offer usually alot more features than the default nameservers from the domain register does.

I know, but considering it's just once a year I can deal with it I guess. There is tons of promo codes on the internet as well.

  • What I usually do is transfer to Godaddy using their $1 or 2 coupon codes, then switch to another registrar like namecheap when they have offers.

  • They are run by their sister company who are ICANN accredited, you will be fine at hover.com.

  • Hover is good you can go ahead

    Are there any "better" alternatives?

I think Hover is the best registrar out there -- they're upfront and clear about pricing (no nickel and diming for, say, private whois), their customer service is truly exemplary, and they're backed by the 4th largest and maybe most reputable registrar in the world. I use them for business domains and couldn't be happier.

Also, their marketing is hilarious: http://www.hover.com/blog/on-sale-now-hipster-domains/

What they're not is the cheapest, though, and that's why I use NameSilo or Internet.BS for personal domains where my expectations are a bit lower and I'd rather just save money.

    Thanks for the info.

  • I use namesilo and namecheap also they are also equally good

  • I have one domain with Dynadot, and three with NameSilo. Both pretty good imo.

  • Are there any Domain registrars that do not host DNS NS? I host all my domains on Amazon's NS, would be nice to pay for the domain and not DNS.

Depends on what type of records you need. I ended up switching to a third party DNS provider (DNSMadeEasy) after I had a nasty time with one of my registrars and problems getting a DKIM key set up in their DNS panel, and even after contacting support, they did exactly the same thing I did and I ended up with an incomplete record (it ended at the ; after the domainkey bit).

If you just need regular A, MX, TXT and CNAME records, any registrar would work for you. The one I am using now supports SVR, AAAA and a bunch of others that I might use in the future.

If you just want a registrar that doesn't do their own nameservers (unlikely) you'd need to find one that doesn't deal with hosting at all.

Personally I recommend Dynadot or Moniker.

  • Namecheap!

  • Is Whois.com a reseller?

  • I have a number of .au domains so Hover is one registrar who can handle them.

I would love Namesilo to support AUDA domains. Moniker looks interesting, and they already have the NZ names on their systems.
