FOSSVPS Important update

Hi, it has been sometime since I did an update about FOSSVPS so it is well overdue....and this is important.

FOSSVPS is all about supporting users and providers. An Open Source developer gets a free VPS on condition that they support FOSSVPS and promote the provider. The provider benefits from the thanks of the community and also for feeding something back into Open Source development. I (Mike) do all the sysadmin and support entirely free, as I also want to help both the community and the providers. The great idea originally came from @Not_Oles (Tom) .

I have been running FOSSVPS for over a year and to be honest I am becoming disappointed with the current users / clients. When was the last time you saw anyone promoting / thanking a provider of FOSSVPS ?

Over the year, the system has been abused (NodeSeek) and I have had criticism about why I am doing this e.g. selling / spying, so I am making changes.

Usage stats show that the majority of VPS are idle, indicating it is time for a FOSSVPS annual clear out. All free VPS users MUST re-apply for a server. If no response by November 23rd, the VPS and all user records will be destroyed. To renew, you can send a message to @msatt with your VPS ID plus location and I will happily respond. Only request renewal if you are genuinely using the server for real development work as your resources could provide other new developers the free 'break' they deserve.

Because of recent price increases by colocrossing, MSATT will no longer provide the free servers in the US (clients will receive a separate email about this).

Having a 'clearout' is something I should have introduced at the very start as clients do move on and projects slow down. So I apologise if this comes as a suprise but it is something that is necessary.

Wish you well.
Mike

Sad, and understandable. Inb4 any accusations of whatever; it's a FREE service run by donations and volunteers. If you don't like it don't bother and/or do it better yourself lol.

    @msatt Mike,

Thanks for your hard work on FOSSVPS!

You have done and are doing a lot!

Changes when you took over FOSSVPS included adding the free software developer requirement and switching the nypervisors to Proxmox. Now there also is the one year renewal requirement.

Our fellings about Nodeseek might be a little different. I feel friendly towards Nodeseek and the people there. Many of them have been kind to me, and the Nodeseekers are almost always polite. I still visit Nodeseek every day.

If you ever feel that you want a break from FOSSVPS leadership, one thing you could do is give FOSSVPS back to me. If FOSSVPS were returned to me, I might use Debian, virsh, virt-install, and libvirt. I might drop both the developer and the annual renewal requirements. Hopefully the extended FOSSVPS discussion threads with thanks to the Providers might resume, here, at Nodeseek, and elsewhere. I would again look for a few friends from the community to help with system administration and client support.

If you continue with FOSSVPS, I will continue wishing you well and believing that the Low End Community should be grateful to you for your extended efforts.

    Thank you again!

    Always best wishes!

    Tom
