Thanks for the explanation. Now I get why hosters are more reluctant to sell it. Does anyone have numbers how much of a price hike would be fair from a technical point of view?
Fair is what YOU are willing to pay.
No, that is market economics. I think you are confusing things here. Fair = cost + x%, Market economics = whatever I can charge. I believe that is why buyers are at LET - to not get price gauged.
99% of the reason is just that it requires specific modern processors and has immature integration with the controls that most providers are used to. The increased memory requirements aren't as big of a deal (KSM doesn't save that much).
I think @forest is right, it's less about KSM or overselling and more about requiring specific processors and integration with control software.
Many customers also don't care for memory encryption and you can't live migrate a machine with encrypted memory making it more of a challenge from a maintenance perspective.
We are working on rolling out AMD SEV-SNP and boot attestation but it will be a slow process because we need to change BIOS settings of every hypervisor in our fleet to accommodate it.
There is also really not a lot of mature documentation out there, especially regarding boot attestation/measured boot. Memory encryption is better than nothing but if your server is being targeted (in a hypothetical scenario), it is kind of pointless without attestation.
