It’s really hard not knowing English. I can only use a translator. I thought there was a new message.

Hey everyone, new here (Frme). I'm a software developer and spend way too much of my free time self-hosting things: a handful of personal projects plus a couple of open-source ones that need a home. Mostly interested in networking, deployment, and figuring out which VPS providers actually hold up under real use.

Been lurking LET for a while and finally made an account. Looking forward to learning from you all, and I'll share what I learn as I go. Also curious to give AdminBolt a proper spin. A modern panel that isn't cPanel bolted onto more cPanel sounds great.

Good luck to everyone in the next round!

Hi @Frme -- Welcome to LET! :) Sounds like you'll fit right in here.

Would be great to hear your take on AdminBolt with your developer and self-hosting background. It's about time there's some healthy (and modern) alternatives to the hosting control panel market imo!

Thanks @RackNerd and @AdminBolt for putting together this giveaway!

I’m looking forward to testing AdminBolt on a RackNerd VPS to manage lightweight containerized staging services, personal API proxies, and automate web hook deployments. Always excited to see modern, clean management panel alternatives.

Best of luck to everyone participating!

Woot woot! Sounds like you've already got a few projects lined up for it. Would be interesting to hear how AdminBolt fits into your workflow once you've tried it -- glad you're here joining in, and good luck catching a round!

ADMINBOLT is the best VPS control and management panel available today. I have used at least six different control panels—including both commercial and free solutions—and this one is the best by far.

    ADMINBOLT

Hi @Anpassda -- That's quite an endorsement, especially after trying six different panels! :) IMO, AdminBolt is definitely shaping up to become a major player in the hosting control panel space. With the pace of development and the feedback coming in here, I'm excited to see where it goes next. Thank You for sharing your experience!

Thanks RackNerd and AdminBolt for the giveaway!

Installed AdminBolt v1.9.2 from the One-Click Apps in RackNerd ctrl, no SSH needed. Free myboltip.com subdomain came with working SSL right away, which was nice.

    Good:

    • Firewall, Fail2Ban and auto SSL already on out of the box
    • phpMyAdmin, Roundcube, file manager, backups and the AI assistant all just worked

    Issues:

    • WordPress install failed on default settings ("Found: index.php"), worked after ticking "Clean existing files"
    • Mail to Gmail bounces (SPF/DKIM fail). Zone Editor has the records, but on the free subdomain only the A record is public, and DNS Health still says Healthy
    • Backups page says to contact the provider, but manual Filesystem Backups work fine

Overall feels like a fast, modern cPanel alternative. Looking forward to updates!

Hi @subkii -- You're very welcome! :) Glad the one-click setup within ctrl got you going smoothly, and appreciate you sharing where things worked well and where you hit a snag.

@Chris_AdminBolt -- could you take a look at the mail/DNS behavior on the free subdomain and see if the backup message can be fine-tuned to eliminate confusion? Thanks for including those details @subkii

@dustinc I’d like to report two issues:
    1. After installing AdminBolt, I can no longer log in to my server via SSH,If even the server owner cannot access the server via SSH, I don’t see the point of installing AdminBolt.
    2. I was able to log in to the AdminBolt panel initially, but now I can’t access it. It keeps showing the error: “These credentials do not match our records.”

Sorry about that, neither should happen. Let's get you back in.

Panel: the admin login is https://<server-ip>:8443/admin. The bare https://<server-ip>:8443 opens the client login, and admin credentials always fail there with exactly that message. If /admin rejects them too, open the HTML5 console for your VPS in RackNerd's ctrl panel, log in as root and run:

    bolt-cli admin-sso-generate

It prints a one-time login link and the admin username it logs in as, which is no longer admin if you picked a username during onboarding. Once you're in, set a new password under My Profile.

    SSH: in the panel, check:

    1. Settings > Security > Fail2Ban > Bans: if your IP is there, unban it, then add it under Whitelists. Six failed SSH logins in 10 minutes ban an address for 24 hours.
    2. Settings > Security > SSH Access: Permit Root Login should be on, and Allowed IP Addresses empty or containing your IP.

    image

I was able to log in to AdminBolt by following your instructions(bolt-cli admin-sso-generate) , but I still can’t log in to my server via SSH.

Glad the panel works again. Your screenshot shows SSH is open to any IP and root login is allowed on the server, so those two settings aren't blocking you. That leaves three things to check:

    1. Port. Settings > Security > SSH Access shows the SSH Port above Access Restrictions. If it isn't 22, connect with ssh -p <port> root@<server-ip>.
    2. Fail2Ban ban. Six failed SSH logins in 10 minutes ban an address for 24 hours. Go to Settings > Security > Fail2Ban > Bans; if your IP is listed, click Unban, then add it under Whitelists so it doesn't happen again.
    3. Root password. If SSH answers "Permission denied", the password is wrong. You can reset the root password for your VPS in RackNerd ctrl.

If none of these helps, paste or DM me the last lines ssh -v root@<server-ip> prints and we'll take it from there.

It’s working now. The issue was that Fail2Ban had banned my IP address.

Got it, thank you for the update :)

I won a vps and tried the adminbolt. I tried it for couple of hours: this is my small feedback:

    Installation time exactly 10 minutes.
Prearranging the panel was easy and straightforward.
The panel missing one main nice feature: I think so many will use it. Docker. Node or python apps are there in the panel through a module
But as an alternative for cpanel: you can say it is like some nice copy paste. So any user used cpanel, will find it easy to fit here in no time.
And as some other said: the design is nice, but not fully professionally published. It looks like it has some ai touches.
There is one thing, ram using after installation about 1.3 GB, which is too high. Some other panels I tried have about 1 GB with apps and docker running. So 1.3 GB without anything used it too high.
Other thing is the pricing: I know it won't be expensive as cpanel licenses. But, For example of one service or one website will be used on the vps, 20 Eur a month with a deal vps with yearly price like this one, is too high. So consider having a different pricing patterns, for different uses.
tldr: AdminBolt is a good alternative for cpanel, specially for old and not experienced users. For advance users/developers, it need some work.

Thank you @dustinc @adminbolt @Chris_AdminBolt for this chance.

Hi @morgan44 -- You're very welcome, and Thank You for spending a couple of hours trying it out! :) Glad getting started was straightforward and the layout felt familiar coming from cPanel.

You make a fair point about the different use cases -- someone hosting one personal site will look at pricing differently from a provider managing lots of accounts. I'll leave that, along with your memory usage suggestions, to @Chris_AdminBolt to better comment on. As far as I can remember I believe a stock cPanel/WHM installation is right about the same in terms of memory usage, so perhaps it is expected for the nature of the stack? Either way, I appreciate you sharing what worked for you and what would make it a better fit!
