Not too surprised either. In my experience the free tiers were always the first thing to get squeezed once usage spiked, and the rolling limits on the paid plans already feel tighter than they did earlier this year. What I've ended up doing is keeping the heavy reasoning stuff for one paid sub and pushing quick lookups and boilerplate to whatever cheap or free model is still around, which stretches the caps a lot. Flash-Lite is fine for summaries, but for anything with multi-step logic the drop from Pro is pretty noticeable.

yes it was free (kinda trial for a year) esp Pro and Deep Research. But Google seem to downgrade everyone before the trial ends. Seems people are buring GPUs and RAMs for getting answers from gemini.
I got a shady Jio sub (18 months) for real cheap, like a dollar or sth.
Nothing can replace gemini. It's cheap, had generous quotas, and good multi-modal.
GPT is not cheap.
Deepseek is cheap but a bit slow, and the multi-modal is crap.
Xiaomi Mimo is fair but isnt that good, and extremely slow. Basically only good in benchmarks.
Qwen can be very powerful but slow at the same time. Better multi-modal than deepseek.
For average use, either gemini or deepseek for me. Maybe with Qwen.
the API for flash as a free user is too low anyway, only 20RPD, is this the web version?

eh API was always low, 0 RPD for pro, 20 RPD for flash, highest i saw was back in gpt4 release where google tried to compete and give bout 300 RPD for flash

I prefer not to publicly disclose how, but if you search "gemini jio 18 months cheap" then you would also probably get an answer.
TL;DR is that they use that money for Jio telecom services, then the Google AI sub is bundled as a promo of that.
Keep in mind that this will region lock the acc to India. Use a new account just to be safe.

Update:
Now the default is "Flash" on my screen. Still there are those 3 options. If I choose PRO and ask a question to gemini, then i get response as follows:
"I'm having a hard time fulfilling your request. Can I help you with something else instead?"
then if i select Flash with same prompt, I get the answer.
so Pro seems gone.

The model selection menu would read “Auto” if the “Smart model selection” toggle is turned on.
However, it doesn’t seem to give access to the Flash or Pro models.

Update: Just found out that google AI studio is still free. You can still use gemini 3.8 flash even with a unpaid acc.
