Looking for Real-World Feedback on Onidel Object Storage & HostBrr Storage Box

Hey everyone! I currently use Google Drive for media storage and Systemfreaks for object storage.

I’m pretty disappointed with Systemfreaks’ object storage. Performance hasn’t been great, and the biggest issue is that the data center is in Canada. At first, I thought the latency and performance issues might be due to my location, so I ran two separate benchmarks: one using my own data and another using MinIO’s Warp benchmark tool.

I also tested it from three different locations: my homelab with a 2.5GbE uplink, a German VDS, and a Singapore VPS. The results were consistently poor across all three, so I’m now seriously considering migrating to another provider.

Onidel is one of the candidates. I’ve seen plenty of positive feedback about their VPS services, but not much about their object storage. I don’t have a huge amount of data, and I’d probably go with 1TB or 2TB since the data is mainly critical backups.

Has anyone here actually used Onidel’s object storage? I’d really appreciate feedback from real users.

For media storage, Google Drive has been solid, but it has limitations for some use cases. There are workarounds, but I’d rather avoid anything that could violate Google’s ToS or put the account at risk.

That’s why I’m also considering HostBrr. I like their Hybrid VPS and Storage Box offerings, but I haven’t seen much recent feedback on performance. I vaguely remember seeing a comment that Storage Box might be capped at around 20 MiB/s.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone currently using HostBrr, especially regarding real-world storage performance, reliability, and any notable limitations.

I’m using Onidel’s Object Storage to backup my PC using the Arq application. Hasn’t skipped a beat. Don’t have anything too exciting to say, it just works and performance for me has been good to their Sydney location, which is just a few hundred KM away from where I am.

Originally I was using MinIO which I’d set up, but pulled that down as the community edition was nerfed and stopped getting distributed security updates. Decided at that point to just adopt a managed solution, and the timing was around the time Onidel launched their service starting in Singapore (later migrated to Sydney when that opened up).

Also find Onidels support to always be responsive, which I’m sure you’ve seen with other feedback on the VPS service.

So happy to recommend them.

I have no personal experience using HostBrr Storage Box, so can’t comment there.

I have a couple of questions about their object storage:

1. Is the plan limited to a single bucket, or are you subscribing to a storage capacity that you can use across multiple buckets, each with its own configuration?
2. Have you noticed any performance drops when syncing large volumes of data? I’m mainly trying to figure out whether they impose any rate limits.

You can create multiple buckets and allocated storage included in plan is shared between them.

We have rate limits on requests per second to prevent abuse of the service, but they should not interfere with regular usage.

Got DE & US hostbrr Storage Box, been solid for my use (storing a bunch of zipped photos, music, some random yt videos).

Back when the deals were still hot, it was slow af...but so far it seems much more stable. I push new music like once a week and get much more reasonable speeds, like 80-150 MiB/s.

and i mount both using rclone vfs, use it for navidrome, been good so far. dont know how it would perform paired with something like immich/jellyfin though.

for Onidel object storage, never use it. So far i only rely on B2, but im interested with their sg object storage since its closer to me. Might wait for BF just in case there's another object storage deal from @onidel 👀

both of them are not for production, HostBrr used very briefly unpredictable disk performance, just use them for backup, if you have lots of file don't buy 1tb plan at onidel buy 3x 250gb or 2x 512, recently moved everything out of them, now just using them as back up till my term expires

sorry, but if you are only using 19 GB of storage while consuming the full 3 million object limit, then unfortunately our Object Storage service may not be a good fit for your use case.
